    6.5 Earthquake in Nevada

    Magnitude 6.5 Earthquake in Nevada

The USGS has up-to-date details on the May 15 event.

    Release Date: MAY 15, 2020
A magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck near Tonopah, Nevada, near the California-Nevada border and about 120 miles southeast of Carson City, early this morning on May 15, 2020, at 4:03 am local time (11:03:27 UTC).

Seismic instruments indicate the earthquake originated at a depth of 1.7 miles (2.8 km). The quake occurred as the result of strike slip faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate.

The earthquake struck about 34.7 miles (56 km) west of Tonopah, Nevada, and about 120 miles south east of Carson City, Nevada. Perceived shaking for the quake was strong to very strong. The event was widely felt, with more than 15,000

"Did You Feel It?" reports thus far submitted. The pager was green, meaning a low likelihood of casualties and damage.

This event is already triggering aftershocks, which will decrease in frequency over time. The largest aftershock at the time of writing was a M 5.1 event 23 minutes after the mainshock. See the aftershock forecast for details.

The USGS is coordinating its response with the Nevada Seismological Laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Visit the USGS earthquake event page for more information. For estimates of casualties and damage, visit the USGS Prompt Assessment of Global Earthquakes for Response (PAGER) website.

If you felt this earthquake, report your experience on the “USGS Did You Feel It?” website for this event.

LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — A magnitude 6.5 earthquake was recorded Friday morning in remote western Nevada, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake shook around 4:03 a.m. with an epicenter in Esmeralda County, about 35 miles west of Tonopah, the USGS reports.

The initial report for the temblor put the magnitude at 6.4 before it was upgraded later in the morning, the agency said.

The area around the Mw6.4 Nevada EQ will continue to experience more earthquakes than usual. Some may be larger, but many smaller. Follow our aftershock forecast (http://ow.ly/rLHT50zH8Xr ) and remember to always Drop, Cover, and Hold on if you feel shaking. #usgs #NVQuake.

The Nevada Seismological Laboratory says six aftershocks larger than magnitude 4.5 followed in the hour after the quake, the largest being 5.1.

It's the largest earthquake recorded in the region since 1934, when a 6.5 magnitude shaker hit about 24 miles to the northwest, according to the lab.

The earthquake happened in the Walker Lane, a 60-mile-wide zone of active faults.

U.S. 95 is closed so authorities can assess damage in the area between Coaldale Junction and Mina, the Mineral and Esmeralda county sheriff's offices both said in posts to Facebook.

Sheriff's deputies are working with Nevada Highway Patrol and the Nevada Department of Transportation, the posts state.

Traffic is being diverted to State Route 360, which connects Highway 95 with U.S. 6 west of Coaldale Junction.

NDOT spokesman Tony Illia said in a statement the highway will be closed until at least 5 p.m. Friday.

Most of the cracks have a minor lift that will be shaved to reduce the bumps in the road as a temporary fix. A full repair will be planned for sometime in the future.

Nye County Sheriff Sharon Wehrly said in a video statement that some broken windows have been found in Tonopah, along with some groceries knocked off shelves.

Deputies are also headed to the town of Gabbs to check on residents and assess any possible damage.

No damage has been reported in the towns of Lunin and Mina, according to the Mineral County Sheriff's Office.

Shaking has been felt in the Reno and Las Vegas areas and as far west as the Bay Area in California.

This is a developing story. Check back for updates as they become available.
