6 killed, at least 23 hurt in Christmas weekend shootings

Six men were killed and at least 23 others were wounded in Christmas weekend shootings across the city, police said.

The 29 people were shot between Thursday evening and Sunday evening. This tally does not include people shot by Chicago Police.


Most of the people were shot on Christmas Day. Two men were killed and 10 people were hurt in those shootings between 2:40 a.m. and 10:40 p.m. on Friday.


At 8:30 a.m. Friday, a 22-year-old man was found with a gunshot wound to the head on a back porch in the 5500 block of West Monroe Street in the Austin neighborhood on the West Side, according to police.


He was pronounced dead on the scene, said Chicago policespokeswoman Officer Amina Greer. Police are conducting a death investigation; it has not yet been determined whether the shooting was being investigated as a homicide.
About 12:20 p.m. Friday, a 20-year-old man was killed in the 700 block of West 71st Street in Englewood, said Chicago police spokeswoman Officer Janel Sedevic.
Officers responded to a call of shots fired and found the man with a gunshot wound to the side. He was taken in critical condition to Stroger Hospital and pronounced dead a few minutes later, Sedevic said.
The Cook County medical examiner's office identified him as Angelo Frazier of the 600 block of Sullivan Lane in University Park. He was pronounced dead at 12:24 p.m.
Three more men were shot to death and at least seven people, including a 16-year-old boy and a 55-year-old woman, were wounded between Saturday afternoon and early Sunday morning.
About 2:15 a.m. Sunday, a 28-year-old man was killed in an Englewood neighborhood shooting that also wounded a 28-year-old woman, police said.
They were outside near the intersection of 59th Street and Wentworth Avenue when people walked up and fired shots, Greer said.
The man was taken to University of Chicago Medical Center and pronounced dead, Greer said. The woman was taken to Stroger Hospital with a gunshot wound to the back, and her condition was stabilized.
The medical examiner's office identified him as Tyree White, of the 200 block of East 121st Place, and said he was 29 years old.
A 36-year-old man was killed at 9:50 p.m. Saturday, police said.
He was sitting outside with a group of people in the 2800 block of 21st Place when an SUV drove up. The people inside flashed gang signs and fired shots, and the man was hit in the chest and mouth.
A friend drove him to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he was listed in critical condition and later pronounced dead.
About 7:20 p.m. Saturday, a 28-year-old man was killed in Lawndale, Greer said. He was found in a vehicle in the 600 block of South Tripp Avenue with multiple gunshot wounds to the torso. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and later pronounced dead.
On Christmas Eve, a 30-year-old man was killed and two others, including a 14-year-old, were wounded in three separate shootings between 5 p.m. and 10 p.m. Thursday.
The fatal attack happened just before 5 p.m. Thursday in the 7300 block of South Vernon Avenue in the city's Park Manor neighborhood, police said. The man suffered a gunshot wound to the head, police said. About 5:50 p.m., police said the man was dead at the scene.
The medical examiner's office said the man was identified as Craig Harris, who lived in the same block where he was shot.
Photos taken after the shooting showed the man dead in a gangway between two bungalows as police investigated.
In the latest shootings, three men were wounded in incidents Sunday afternoon and evening.
This story does not include 55-year-old Bettie R. Jones who was accidentally fatally shot by Chicago Police. During that shooting, which happened on the West Side early Saturday, 19-year-old Quintonio LeGrier was also fatally shot.
In a separate incident which happened on the Far South Side Saturday afternoon, a man in his 20s was also shot by police. He was listed in critical condition at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn as of Sunday morning.
