8 Killed, 40 Wounded in Weekend Shootings Across Chicago

Eight men were killed and at least 40 other people were wounded in shootings across Chicago between Friday evening and Monday morning.

An 18-year-old man was shot multiple times at 6:09 p.m. in the 2500 block of West 68th Street, police said. Officers responded to a call of a person shot and found the man at the mouth of an alley with a gunshot wound to the head and multiple gunshot wounds to his body. He was taken to Holy Cross Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Cook County medical examiner’s office was not immediately able to confirm the death.

Saturday morning, a man was gunned down in the Little Village neighborhood on the Southwest Side. About 7 a.m., officers responding to reports of shots fired in the 2600 block of West 23rd Street found 26-year-old Vincent Zarco unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the head, according to police and the medical examiner’s office. Zarco, who lived in the 2400 block of Wesley Avenue in Berwyn, was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 7:25 a.m., authorities said. Officers also saw a vehicle drive away from the scene. When they attempted to pull it over, the driver threw a gun out of the window. The two people inside the vehicle were taken into custody and were being questioned by Area Central detectives Saturday morning.


Several hours earlier, a man was shot to death in the South Side Woodlawn neighborhood. A vehicle pulled up to the 26-year-old man about 4:30 a.m. Saturday in the 6100 block of South Rhodes, and someone inside shot him in the neck. He was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where he died, police said. The medical examiner’s office has not yet released his name.
Friday night, another 26-year-old man was slain in the West Rogers Park neighborhood on the Northwest Side. He was outside at 8:55 p.m. in the 6000 block of North Talman when a group of people walked up and fired shots, hitting him in the chest, police said. He was taken to Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston, where he was pronounced dead at 9:35 p.m., authorities said. His name has not been released.

About 8:15 p.m. Friday, a mass shooting in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side left one man dead and six more people wounded. They were standing together in the 3300 block of West Maypole when someone in a black vehicle going east opened fire, police said. Three men, ages 26, 27 and 34, suffered gunshot wounds to the arms and legs and took themselves and 32-year-old Jeffrey Brinson to Mount Sinai Hospital, authorities said. Brinson, who suffered multiple gunshot wounds, was pronounced dead at 8:33 p.m. The men were all listed in good condition. Also, a 31-year-old man was shot in the left arm and a 22-year-old woman was shot in the right foot, police said. Both were taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition. A 21-year-old woman suffered a graze wound to the face and was treated at the scene.
About 15 minutes earlier, two men were killed in an Austin neighborhood drive-by shooting on the West Side. Jamal Thomas, 18, and 20-year-old Jermale Richardson were standing by a parked car about 8 p.m. in the 5500 block of West Congress Parkway when a grey sedan pulled up and someone inside fired shots, authorities said. The sedan drove away west after the shooting. Thomas, who lived on the same block as the incident, was struck in the head and taken to Stroger Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 8:21 p.m., authorities said. Richardson, of the 1100 block of South Albany, suffered multiple gunshot wounds and was taken to Stroger Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 8:42 p.m.

About 6:45 p.m. Friday, 18-year-old Faizon Smith was in the gangway of a building in the 4500 block of West Maypole in the West Garfield Park neighborhood, when someone fired shots from a vehicle and drove away. Smith, of the 4400 block of West Washington, was shot in the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:26 p.m., authorities said.
The most recent nonfatal shooting happened early Monday in the Fuller Park neighborhood on the South Side.

A 24-year-old man was walking at 12:10 a.m. in the 3900 block of South Wells when two males walked up, one of whom pulled out a gun and opened fire, police said. The man was shot in the left hand, right foot and buttocks and was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
At least 33 more people were wounded in other shootings since between 5:30 p.m. Friday and 9:30 p.m. Sunday.

Additionally, a Chicago Police officer shot a male in the leg at 8:52 p.m. Sunday when officers saw a robbery taking place at a Citgo Gas Station, 1001 N. Cicero Ave., police said. A handgun was found at the gas station and the male was taken to Stroger Hospital in serious-to-critical condition.
