The Activists Behind the People’s Climate March Talk About What They Do When Not Climate Marching
20 Shares By Kevin Boyd 7 hours ago
Over the weekend, a crowd estimated at over 400,000 marched in the People’s Climate March in New York City to demand international action on climate change.
Reason TV interviewed some of the participants. Here’s what they found:
- Numerous calls for corporations to be “reined in” and “held accountable.” The U.S. government is America’s biggest single polluter.
- Calls for green energy. However, they don’t want wind turbine factories and solar factories in their communities.
- Calls to make fracking a crime. A recent federal study found no evidence that it caused water pollution.
- A broad consensus among the participants that Americans had to change their lifestyles and had “too much stuff;” one older man said we needed to “turn everything off,” including our cell phones. Meanwhile, the cameraman cut to a young man in a penguin costume playing with his smartphone.
- A banner from the Revolutionary Communist Party calling for a revolution. Members of the RCP were involved in last month’s riots in Ferguson, Missouri.
- Numerous socialist, communist, and radical organizations were there to promote their message of anti-capitalism, offering socialism as the solution to the world’s environmental problems. Some communist and socialist organizations were even sponsors of the march itself.
This comes on the heels of numerous environmental organizations joining with the Venezuelan government in July at a conference to suggest that the only way to end “climate change” was to end capitalism.
Greenpeace co-founder Patrick Moore sees a pattern of environmentalist groups being hijacked to promote a communist and radical message in the name of defending the environment.
What wasn’t mentioned in either of these videos, however, is the way that free markets and property rights can help preserve the environment by incentivizing the property owner to protect their property and even improve it.
