Airport body scanners violate Islamic law, Muslims say

Airport body scanners violate Islamic law, Muslims say

Saying that body scanners violate Islamic law, Muslim-American groups are supporting a "fatwa" — a religious ruling — that forbids Muslims from going through the scanners at airports.

The Fiqh Council of North America — a body of Islamic scholars — issued a fatwa this week that says going through the airport scanners would violate Islamic rules on modesty.

PRIVACY, TIME, SECURITY: Scanners stir fears over security lines
FAITH & REASON: Discuss religion, spirituality, ethics
FATWA: Issued on prayer ringtones for Egypt's Muslims

"It is a violation of clear Islamic teachings that men or women be seen naked by other men and women," reads the fatwa issued Tuesday. "Islam highly emphasizes haya (modesty) and considers it part of faith. The Quran has commanded the believers, both men and women, to cover their private parts."

The decision could complicate efforts to intensify screening of potential terrorists who are Muslim. After the Christmas Day bombing attempt in Detroit by a Muslim suspect from Nigeria, some have called for the use of body scanners at airports to find explosives and other dangerous materials carried by terrorists. Some airports are now in the process of buying and using the body scanners, which show in graphic detail the outlines of a person's body.

But Muslim groups say the scanners go against their religion. One option offered to passengers who don't want to use the scanners would be a pat down by a security guard. The Muslim groups are urging members to undergo those instead.

Two members of the Fiqh Council are from Michigan, Imam Hassan Qazwini of the Islamic Center of America in Dearborn and Imam Ali Suleiman Ali of the Canton Mosque. "Fiqh" means Islamic jurisprudence.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations, which has a chapter in Michigan, says it endorses the fatwa.

"We support the Fiqh Council's statement on full-body scanners and believe that the religious and privacy rights of passengers can be respected while maintaining safety and security," said Nihad Awad, national executive director of CAIR.

A spokesman for the Transportation Safety Administration was not available to immediately comment.

Here's a solution to all the controversy over full-body scanners at the airports. Have a booth that you can step into that will not X-ray you, but will detonate any explosive device you may have on you.

It would be a win-win for everyone, and there wold be none of this crap about racial profiling and this method would eliminate a long and expensive trial.Â* Justice would be quick and swift.

    Case Closed!Â*

This is funny! If you don't go through a body scanner at an airport, forget getting on a plane! Just like you can't have your driver's license photo taken while wearing a burqa!
It will be a horrendous day when each airplane needs to provide footbaths, prayer mats and the crew needs to instruct passengers every few minutes which way is Mecca and captains must be trained to have prayer call when it is time (five times a day).
These folks have no leg to stand on, since the majority of terrorists on world flights have been devout Muslim radicals. A demand for special consideration goes against our interests of national security. If anyone gives way to this, we will probably see live chickens on airplanes to be sacrificed during Santaria prayer.
Moving to Antarctica is looking better every day.

THAT is actually a brilliant idea...BRILLIANT!! A bomb proof booth or container...so if the person explodes the explosion will be contained within the unit.

    That's not a bad idea!
So we get rid of a terrorist, save the lives of perhaps thousands of Americans, avoid a costly trial and years of imprisonment and we create a job for the person who has to clean the booth!

These are the ideas our president and his administration should be coming up with!!

Not to worry, the Muslim Brotherhood will open up a CAIR chapter there too. Snow and ice will then be deemed against Islam and lawsuits will be filed against the penquins and seals for discriminating against muslims.
