As details of the Green New Deal begin to emerge, it may lead to doom for the Democrats in 2020, American Enterprise Institute senior fellow Marc Thiessen argued Friday.
This week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, D-N.Y., and Sen. Ed Markey, D-Mass., debuted their blueprint for a broad economic and environmental agenda that has been widely embraced by several 2020 candidates.
During the "Special Report" All-Star” panel, Thiessen -- along with Washington Free Beacon editor-in-chief Matthew Continetti and Washington Post opinion writer Charles Lane -- weighed on how the Green New Deal may affect both parties in upcoming elections.

2020 DEMS EMBRACE GREEN NEW DEAL, AS GOP SEES CAMPAIGN GOLD

Thiessen began by declaring that Ocasio-Cortez is the “greatest thing that ever happened to Donald Trump and the Republican Party.”
“She is going to make the Democrats unelectable in 2020 by going down this path. The Democrats want to take your car, they want to take your house, they want to take health insurance, they want to take your air travel, and they even want to take away your hamburgers. That is the platform on which they are going to be running in 2020,” Thiessen told the panel. “The Republicans are going to wrap this around the Democrats’ necks like an albatross and ride it into the next election.”
"The Democrats want to take your car, they want to take your house, they want to take health insurance, they want to take your air travel, and they even want to take away your hamburgers."
    — Marc Thiessen, senior fellow, American Enterprise Institute
Lane expressed that it’s a “little overstated” for the Green New Deal to be a political dream for the GOP because the phrase itself polls pretty well, but conceded that Democrats who get behind the resolution will have to “defend a lot of hard-to-defend things.”

Meanwhile, Continetti told the panel that the Green New Deal may be “popular in the abstract” but will be “unpopular in the specifics.”
“I think it is intellectually dishonest because you have these grand plans, but you forswear nuclear power. There’s no way that we can even make a huge dent in our carbon emissions without embracing nuclear,” Continetti said. “There’s a sentence in Ocasio-Cortez’s document where she writes, ‘We’re going to guarantee economic security to people unable or unwilling to work.’ That would overturn the entirety of the American welfare state beginning with the New Deal. We’ve always provided for people who were incapable of working. She wants to say, ‘No, it doesn’t matter whether you’re capable or not. If you don’t want to work, we’ll take care of you anyway.’ This is a radical plan.”

Buchanan: Are The Democrats Bent On Suicide?

    Tue, 02/12/2019 - 10:02
    39 SHARES

Authored by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

After reading an especially radical platform agreed upon by the British Labor Party, one Tory wag described it as “the longest suicide note in history.”

The phrase comes to mind on reading of the resolution calling for a Green New Deal,
advanced by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and endorsed by at least five of the major Democratic candidates for president.
The Green New Deal is designed to recall the halcyon days of the 1930s, when, so the story goes, FDR came to Washington to enact the historic reforms that rescued America from the Great Depression.
Only that story is more than a small myth.
The unemployment rate when FDR took the oath in 1933 was 25 percent. It never fell below 14 percent through the 1930s. In June 1938, despite huge Democratic majorities in Congress, FDR was presiding over a nation where unemployment was back up to 19 percent.
World War II and the conscription of 16 million young men gave us “full employment.” And the war’s end and demobilization saw the return of real prosperity in 1946, after FDR was dead.
Yet this Green New Deal is nothing if not ambitious.
To cope with climate change, the GND calls for a 10-year plan to meet “100 percent of the power demand of the United States through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources.”
This appears to require a phase-out by 2030 of all carbon-emitting power plants fueled by coal and oil and their replacement by power plants fueled by wind and solar.
Will natural gas be permitted? Will nuclear power? There are 60 commercially operating nuclear power plants with 98 nuclear reactors in 30 states. Will they be shut down? Will the Greens agree to dam up more U.S. rivers to produce renewable hydroelectric power?
Air travel consumes huge quantities of carbon-producing jet fuel. What will replace it? Perhaps progressive Democratic candidates will set an example by not flying, and then by voting to end production of private aircraft and to ground all corporate jets. Let the elites sail to Davos.
The GND calls for an overhaul of the “transportation systems in the United States to eliminate pollution and greenhouse gas emissions from the transport sector … through … clean, affordable and accessible public transportation; and high-speed rail.”
Gas-powered cars are out. How long will that train trip from DC to LA take? And if China continues its relentless rise in carbon emissions until 2030, as permitted by the Paris climate accord, while the U.S. spends itself into bankruptcy going green, where would that leave America and China at midcentury?
“By the end of the Green New Deal resolution (and accompanying fact sheet) I was laughing so hard I nearly cried,” tweeted the Wall Street Journal’s Kimberley Strassel:
“If a bunch of GOPers plotted to forge a fake Democratic bill showing how bonkers the party is, they could not have done a better job. It is beautiful.”
The Green New Deal, say its authors, has as a goal “stopping current, preventing future, and repairing historic oppression of indigenous peoples, communities of color, migrant communities, deindustrialized communities, depopulated rural communities, the poor, low-income workers, the elderly, the unhoused, peoples with disabilities, and youth.”
Fifty years after the Great Society, apparently half the country consists of victims of oppression.
    Who are their oppressors? Guess.
Among the endorsers of this Green New Deal is Sen. Cory Booker, who compares the battle to stop climate change to fighting the Nazis in World War II. Sens. Kirsten Gillibrand, Kamala Harris and Elizabeth Warren have all endorsed it. Sen. Bernie Sanders, who calls climate change “an existential threat,” was an original co-sponsor.
Nancy Pelosi has more sense. Interviewed last week, the speaker batted the Green New Deal aside: “It will be one of several or maybe many suggestions that we receive. The green dream, or whatever they call it, nobody knows what it is, but they’re for it, right?”
With her own agenda and priorities, Pelosi does not want to be dragged into having to defend a document that reads like it was written by the college socialists club.
The question, though, is why Democrats, who, if nominated, are likely to face Donald Trump in 2020, are signing on to so radical a scheme.
In a presidential election, the “out” party candidate usually has an advantage. No record to defend. He or she can choose the terrain on which to attack the incumbent, who has a four-year record.
Rarely does an out party present a fixed and stationary target as exposed as this, as out-of the-mainstream as this, as vulnerable as this.
The only explanation for the endorsement of the Green New Deal by candidates with a prospect of winning the Democratic nomination is that they are so fearful of Ocasio-Cortez and the left for whom she speaks that they must endorse her plan.
That British Tory got it right. This thing reads like a Democratic Party suicide pact.

(Natural News) As you may have read, “Democratic Socialist” Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) released her “Green New Deal” last week to immediate praise and fanfare from the Left-wing establishment media, though it was instantly panned by critics — including some from her own party — over its many unrealistic objectives.

The plan has already received the endorsement of nearly 70 Democrats and a number of 2020 Democratic presidential contenders including Sens. Kamala Harris of California and Corey Booker of New Jersey. But many others have criticized it for its ridiculous proposals to fight so-called “climate change,” which includes proposals to completely move off all fossil fuels (oil, natural gas, gasoline, coal) and nuclear power (which is emissions-free) within a decade by building a high-speed rail system to replace all air travel and rebuilding every home and building in the country to ensure they are ‘energy efficient.’
However, one of the plan’s many ‘social justice’ provisions turned heads the most: A plan to ensure “economic security” even for people “unwilling to work.”
After an outline of the Green New Deal containing that provision was published online, Ocasio-Cortez had staffers remove it because it was being slammed by Republicans and Democrats alike as too foolish for words. She and her surrogates tried to claim that the initial post was some Republican conspiracy, but archived metadata shows without question the initial post did make such a claim.
Needless to say, however, before the plan was pulled offline, it generated a lot of attention — and support — from younger Americans, Campus Reform noted. So, curious as to just how young people felt about the Green New Deal, the website’s Cabot Phillips went to the University of Miami to get a feel for students’ views.
“I like that it’s progressive, that it’s gonna push the world forward,” one student noted. Another said, “Just from knowing who’s endorsed it and some other little things, it sounds great.”
Another student took a much more serious viewpoint of the Green New Deal, predicting “if we didn’t do that, we’re going to be killing ourselves” — a view reflective of how successful the climate hoaxers have been at convincing young Americans the world’s going to end thanks to SUVs, cattle farts, and life-sustaining carbon dioxide.
Said another student, “I view it favorably,” while yet another added, “It’s definitely a great idea.” (Related: The real Democrat agenda unveiled: Murder the babies, demolish all buildings, block the sun, kill free speech, ban all airplanes and declare a new UTOPIA.)
Then they learned the facts of the plan

But is it? After Phillips began revealing portions of the Green New Deal and, specifically, what their lives would actually be like if it ever passed, students quickly became skeptical.
For instance, in addition to the “no more airplanes allowed” provision, the Green New Deal its packed “with specific provisions that urge a series of truly immense political, economic, and cultural changes to fundamentally remake the United States,” the National Review reported.
The plan calls for 10-year “national mobilization” to achieve “net zero” emissions but also ensure that there is “economic security for all people of the United States.” To get there we’ll have to ensure that 100 percent of our power demands come “through clean, renewable, and zero-emission energy sources.”
Other radical aspects of the plan include a complete overhaul of all transportation systems, free college for all, guaranteed wages, universal healthcare, guaranteed family/medical leave, and a host of other ‘freebies’ — all of which will cost trillions and trillions…and trillions…of dollars America will never have.
All of this was too much for the U of Miami students.
“It doesn’t sound like something I would be behind,” one student admitted after hearing all the details. Another added, “Sometimes you need to take extreme measures to save the environment, but I think this is too extreme.”
Said another: “I think that’s drastic.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s “Green New Deal” is such a bad plan she has to LIE in order to get it passed, like Obama did with Obamacare

(Natural News) If you like your doctor, you can keep your doctor. If you like your current insurance plan, you can keep your current insurance plan.
Your monthly premiums will be $2,500 a year lower. Your monthly deductibles will be reduced.
Emergency room visits will decline. Overall medical costs will decline. And finally — everyone in America will be covered by health insurance.
All of these claims were made by former President Barack Obama and Democrats when they were attempting to sell that fiasco, Obamacare, to the American people. But Americans weren’t fooled; at the time, most voters rejected a government takeover of one-sixth of the economy, so Democrats had to pull a fast one (they cheated) in order to pass Obamacare in March 2010.
As Americans would learn, none of the promises Obama made turned out to be true. Also as Americans learned, thanks to an admission by Obamacare architect Jonathan Gruber, Obama and Democrats counted on the “stupidity” of voters (and a complaint Left-wing media) to perpetuate the deception.
That was then. Now, another “Democratic Socialist” has introduced another Marxist, big government scheme that she and her backers can’t discuss truthfully over fears it will be handily rejected by most Americans.
Last week, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.), accompanied by Sen. Ed Markey (D-Mass.), unveiled her “Green New Deal,” which she claims is primarily a plan to move the United States off of fossil fuels and into “green” renewable energy within a decade. (Related: Like Obama lied about Obamacare, Ocasio-Cortez advisor caught LYING about her ‘Green New Deal’ plan.)
    According to The National Sentinel:
Ocasio-Cortez, Markey, and other Democrats envision a government-led investment effort (read taxpayer-financed, not private industry-financed) on a large scale to develop clean energy infrastructure while transforming the U.S. economy.
“The Green New Deal fully tackles the existential threat posed by climate change by presenting a comprehensive, 10-year plan that is as big as the problem it hopes to solve while creating a new era of shared prosperity,” according to a summary of the plan Democrats released Thursday.
    It’s the Republicans’ fault

But a funny thing has already happened on the way to try to convince Americans to give up all air travel, close most all power plants, and revert to mass transportation — rail service — that was popularized in the 1800s: AOC, as she’s known, and her surrogates have already had to lie about the real details behind the Green New Deal.
In an appearance Friday on Fox News with Tucker Carlson, AOC advisor and Cornell University law professor Robert Hockett claimed that the plan did not contain a provision to essentially provide slackers with a taxpayer-supported stipend even if they didn’t want to work.
The host asked, “Why would we ever pay people who are ‘unwilling to work?’”
“Uh…I…we never would, right? And AOC has never said anything like that. I think you’re referring to some sort of document that…some doctored document that somebody other than us has been circulating,” Hockett said.
The Left-wing monitors of conservative media had a field day ‘correcting’ Tucker. As The Gateway Pundit noted, Andrew Lawrence, a “senior researcher” for Media Matters, tweeted:
AOC retweeted Lawrence’s claim, which means she agreed with him.

    Andrew Lawrence @ndrew_lawrence

    Video at the tweet

Watch what happens when Tucker Carlson steps out of the conservative bubble and brings on an @AOC policy adviser who debunks all the conservative media lies straight to his face (spoiler: it doesn't go great for Tucker)

But as it turns out, Lawrence was wrong and so was Hockett. TGP noted that Tucker referenced an actual document from the website where a summary of the plan was posted — by Saikat Chakrabarti, AOC’s chief of staff, according to metadata taken from the site, as noted by the graphic below:

And that original document did indeed contain a provision calling for paying people for doing nothing — those “unwilling to work.”
But because she’s not mature enough yet to accept when she’s wrong, AOC proceeded to blame “Republicans” for her lie.
    Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez @AOC

When your #GreenNewDeal legislation is so strong that the GOP has to resort to circulating false versions, but the real one nets 70 House cosponsors on Day 1 and all Dem presidential candidates sign on anyway

McConnell Says Senate Will Vote On Ocasio-Cortez's "Green New Deal"

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just lobbed what we imagine will be the first of many stink bombs into the 2020 Democratic primary.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell just lobbed what we imagine will be the first of many stink bombs into the 2020 Democratic primary.
During a news conference on Tuesday where he was flanked by fellow Senate Republican, McConnell revealed that he plans to call a vote on the Green New Deal bill proposed by NYC Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Massachusetts Sen. Ed Markey, a plan that, as we have noted, is filled with extreme proposals like rebuilding every building in the US, and weaning the US off all carbon-based forms of energy within 10 years.

While the plan doesn't have a prayer of passing in the Republican majority Senate, McConnell's intentions should be clear to any avid follower of US politics. Now that no fewer than five Democratic Senators have announced their 2020 campaigns, McConnell is going to force them to make a choice with potentially major consequences down the line:
Will they side with Nancy Pelosi - who derided the plan as AOC's "green dream" - and oppose the GND, or will they acquiesce to the demands of the increasingly far-left Democratic base.
After President Trump dedicated part of his State of the Union speech to deriding the newfound socialist passions of Dems like AOC, the Republicans are clearly trying to tie Democrats to the "Democratic Socialist" agenda.
Other Republicans who joined McConnell on Tuesday denounced the plan as "radical" and "way out of the mainstream" of American politics.
"To me, this is just so extreme," said John Barrasso of Wyoming. "It is that radical. It is a bad deal for the American public."
In a response to McConnell, Senate Minority leader Chuck Schumer managed to trash Republicans for their lack of alternatives on climate change, while not-quite-endorsing the GND.
"What is their answer on climate change? What are they going to put forward?" Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York told reporters after McConnell announced plans for a vote.
So far, all five of the Senators who have officially launched their campaigns have also expressed at least a measure of support for the plan, which calls for a "national mobilization" to move the US economy off fossil fuels, to fight climate change, offer health care for all, increase wages and expand union rights, according to Politico.
