Because they are both criminals, and you seem to want criminals to run our country. Washington is already giving us a good look at what that would be.

We disagree that they shouldn't be in prison!

If they are found innocent they get that right back. But lawmakers before us included the loss of voting "privileges" as part of the punishment for the breaking of laws. Obviously, the druggies who can vote are decriminalizing drugs. And as more get hooked, there will be even more voting away crimes. It is just like illegal aliens allowed to vote would vote to make themselves legal.

A prisoner's self-interest is no different than yours. They have as much right to vote as you do.

For someone that claims to be a Republican, you sure have a lot of left leaning and Libertarian beliefs.

Yes, some illegal aliens should most certainly be in prison! Being an illegal doesn't give you immunity from prosecution for a criminal act. Deportation is not a punishment.

As to citizens in prison or felons, of course they should vote. They might be innocent, the law might be wrong, of course you have the right to vote on all issues and most certainly those that impact you.
Where voting is concerned, there are standards. Children, non-citizens and the mentally ill are not permitted to vote simply because they fail to meet the standards. Not meeting those standards means they haven't earned a role in self-government.

We also need to focus on the fact that prisoners are not very well informed about the political scope when incarcerated. Prisons are meant to keep its inmates locked in and the outside world locked out. Being cut off from society is a certain drawback when it comes to voting. In order to benefit the nation, voters need to be well versed and altruistic. Most uninformed prisoners will vote in support of a liberal agenda because it is a well established fact that Democrats are more likely to support and aid them. Democrats are also more likely to support weakening the criminal justice system.

Your position on this is very odd considering you claim to be a Republican.

It's not "odd" at all. The Republican Party supports individual rights, equal rights, civil rights, worker's rights and voting rights, it's why our party was founded.

Yes, about treating people of different races and social status the same.

Voting is not "conditional". If you are a citizen and a resident of the state you vote in and of age, you have the right to vote under our Constitution. Any other condition you put on is a restriction and suppression of that right to vote.

"Law abiding" has nothing to do with it.

    SO WRONG!

    "Amendment 14, Section 2:
But when the right to vote at any election for the choice of electors for President and Vice President of the United States, Representatives in Congress, the Executive and Judicial officers of a State, or the members of the Legislature thereof, is denied to any of the male inhabitants of such State, being twenty-one years of age, and citizens of the United States, or in any way abridged, except for participation in rebellion, or other crime, the basis of representation therein shall be reduced in the proportion which the number of such male citizens shall bear to the whole number of male citizens twenty-one years of age in such State."

    "Amendment 15, Section 1:
The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of race, color or previous condition of servitude."

    Criminal conviction is not listed.

    "Amendment 15, Section 2:
The Congress shall have power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation."

    Congress decides!

Which party claims otherwise? The devil is in the details.

It's still what I said it was, jtdc, which is restriction and suppression of the vote. States are realizing their voter suppression needs to stop and are beginning to fix this problem, I hope more do. I don't know if they'll go as far as letting prisoners vote again, although they should, but at least restoring voting rights to those who have been released.
