Billionaire George Soros has pledged more cash to help stop Brexit.

The US-based currency speculator initially gave £400,000 to a campaign to reverse the referendum.

He is promising £100,000 more, matching a crowdfunding push, after a tirade of criticism from Brexit-backing newspapers.

Financier Mr Soros, 87, said: “Britain will suffer because 45 years of successful integration with Europe will go into reverse.

“Divorce is very destructive. There is no such thing as a friendly divorce.”

The cash is for the Best For Britain campaign.

CEO Eloise Todd said: “Thousands of small donors have stepped up and matched the kind £100,000 donation of George Soros and his foundations.

“Everyone has a right to be heard and if a country cannot change its mind, it ceases to be a democracy.

“This attack on free speech is deeply worrying and we’re fighting back.”

Mr Soros made his fortune with a £720million bet against the pound on Black Wednesday in 1992.
