ALBANY - Gov. Paterson yesterday socked New Yorkers with a mind-boggling 137 proposed new and hiked taxes on everything from beer to cab rides to iTunes downloads and movie tickets.

The doomsday, $121.1 billion plan represents the biggest tax hike in state history and slashes services across the board - while still increasing spending by $1.4 billion.

    EDITORIAL: Business As Usual...

    The Draconian plan calls for:

    * An "iTunes tax" of 4 percent on videos, music or pictures downloaded from the Internet.

    * A 4 percent tax on taxi, limo and bus rides. That means a $10 cab ride would cost 40 cents more.

    * A 4 percent entertainment tax on tickets to movies, concerts and sporting events. That would add nearly 50 cents to a $12 movie ticket or $1.80 to the cheapest $44.50 seat at a Knicks game.

    * The tax on beer increases 24 cents per gallon, or more than double the current rate, which means about 30 cents a case.

    * An 18 percent tax on nondiet soft drinks, which aims to reduce child obesity. A $1.50 can of Pepsi would then cost at least 25 cents more.

    * A 4 percent tax on cable TV and satellite services, raising a $100 bill by $4.

    * Hiking the cost of "personal" services - including haircuts, manicures, pedicures, massages and gym memberships - by 4 percent.

    * A 4 percent sales tax on clothing and shoes under $500, except for two weeks out of the year.

    * Elimination of the law that caps the state sales tax on gasoline at 8 cents per gallon.

They are trying this in CA also.

It won't effect me much, I am already not buying/using all that stuff, except for gas.

He already taxed the cigarettes they now cost almost $8.00 per pack. He is also taxing cigarettes at the indian reservations which is voiding the US Treaty with them as a Soveriegn Nation. My taxes in NY will now go up about $4000. per year. My health insurance just went from $5772.00 to $7072.00 per year. Paterson is making it so even more people and businesses leave NY State which will lower the tax base even more and againg raise taxes on the people that live here. I guess like most Tax and Spend Democrats he did not learn anything from Reagan's Trickle Down Economics. I sent him a letter telling him to stop the funding of illegals and we will not need any tax increase, I'm sure I wont hear a word on it.

what these politicians do not understand is the American taxpayers do not have infinite money resources. they give our jobs away (h-1b visas) make us pay for the free range slave labor big business wants (so they do not have to pay a living wage) and still pick up the tab for all the pork projects OUR representatives want.

Don't forget Thomas Jefferson. He hit the nail on the head with this one:

We must not let our rulers load us with perpetual debt. We must make our election between economy and liberty or profusion and servitude. If we run into such debt, as that we must be taxed in our meat and in our drink, in our necessaries and our comforts, in our labors and our amusements, for our calling and our creeds...[we will] have no time to think, no means of calling our miss-managers to account but be glad to obtain subsistence by hiring ourselves to rivet their chains on the necks of our fellow-sufferers... And this is the tendency of all human governments. A departure from principle in one instance becomes a precedent for[ another]... till the bulk of society is reduced to be mere automatons of misery... And the fore-horse of this frightful team is public debt. Taxation follows that, and in its train wretchedness and oppression.

That has all already been taxed plus we have a tire fee, you have to pay $2.50 for a waste disposal fee for all of the tires on your car including the spare when purchasing a new car or replacing tires. If it can be taxed in NY it is taxed.....

Next thing you know there will be an estimated tax on the air we breathe, whether that air is clean or not.
