Blockbuster joins Mexican voodoo-doll soccer promotion

    By PETER ORSIThe Associated Press

MEXICO CITY — After RadioShack dropped out, a new U.S. corporate sponsor has stepped up to put a voodoo hex on the U.S. national soccer team and end Mexico’s decade-long losing streak.

Blockbuster stores in Mexico City began trading Record newspaper coupons for voodoo-doll likenesses of U.S. soccer players Friday, which, according to instructions, were to be used to wish for a Mexico goal during the World Cup qualifier Wednesday in Columbus, Ohio. The back of the dolls’ jersey reads, "Gringos."

Fort Worth-based RadioShack dropped out as a distribution partner last week after learning details of the campaign. But the Record newspaper merely had to go to Dallas to find another co-sponsor, DVD and video-game rental chain Blockbuster Inc. A phone message left with the public-relations office was not returned Friday.

Record spokesman Daniel Paz said the promotion is lighthearted.

"In soccer, training and practice are what determine the results," he said. "The best team will win."

Perhaps Paz should do some research into what he's so quick to deem as a "lighthearted" promotion.

My guess is that if he had the slightest of clues as to that of which he speaks, he might have second thoughts in a hurry.

There lies the trouble with Mexico. Instead of relying on voodoo dolls and superstition they need to understand things like winning come through hard work and dedication. That is exactly why half of the country turns tail and runs to American instead of working to change their own country.

Looking for a company to boycott? How about Blockbuster.

Laurie posted the image to the left on the mainpage earlier today, but here’s a development that we all seem to have missed — after Radio Shack dropped out of the voodoo doll promotion, a new US based corporate sponsor stepped in as the treasonous distributor of these things:

But first and foremost: screw you in a prison shower, Blockbuster. I’m opening a Netflix account right now.
I stopped giving Blockbuster my biz years ago. They would constantly charge me for late movies that were turned in on time. In fact, there was a class action law suit against them a few years back for this very reason.
Netflix is wonderful, by the way and they very will likely put BB out of business!

On the other hand I am shocked that Radio Shack pulled out-they are one of the biggest IA hugging companies out there. Every time I am forced to go there for whatever - there is rarely ever an English speaker in there.
