Job applicants have one more thing to worry about besides competing candidates and meeting qualifications – they need to watch out for scams and frauds.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials in Washington, D.C., on Thursday released a statement warning agency job seekers of a recent scam involving a person applying for a job with the department.
A job applicant in Edinburg, Texas, reported that he was told by telephone that in order to be hired with the Border Patrol he had to pay $1,000.
There are no fees associated with any of the agency's jobs, officials said.
Customs and Border Protection is sponsoring recruiting events throughout the country in order to hire about 11,000 people this year, officials said.
Interested applicants should report to authorities any fraudulent requests, such as payments or fees associated with job listings.
Local and federal officials said they are still investigating the report made in Texas.

Last Update: 3/26 9:02 pm
U.S. Customs and Border Protection human resource officials announced today that there will never be a fee to apply for a position within the agency or any other federal agency.
Recently, an applicant at a job fair in Texas notified local personnel that an individual attempted to defraud him by telephone.
The individual told the applicant that that he had a job offer with the Border Patrol and to be hired he had to pay $1,000.
"CBP is hosting dozens of recruiting events at locations around the country and unfortunately people are trying to unduly capitalize on this large-scale hiring effort," said Lorraine Phillips, executive director for Human Resources Operations, Programs and Policy. "We are striving to become a household name and to be recognized as an employer of choice-this does not include payment from the public."
Incidents of this nature should be immediately reported to law enforcement authorities immediately.
This particular incident was reported to local and federal law enforcement authorities for further investigation.
