BREAKING: US Downgraded Status of EU – But Did Not Formally Announce It

The Trump Administration downgraded the status of the European Union in the US and did not formally announce it.

This is the maximum insult in terms of diplomatic procedure and protocol.
The EU delegation was just informed about the change and they are absolutely livid.

The relationship between Brussels and Washington has gotten far worse.
The protests from Brussels have commenced but to no avail.
This amounts to a total demotion for the EU ambassador to the US — David O’Sullivan.
Some commentators say this has been a year in the making with Trump castigating the EU and taking a shot across their bow.

He imposed tariffs on European steel and aluminum and threatens to do the same on their automobile exports.
This would cost them dearly; especially the Germans.
Earlier, the EU slammed Trump’s favorite (Ted Malloch) to be his ambassador to the Union and some even tried to make him persona non grata.
That translates as “not welcomed”.
It was an insult to Trump and his worldview.
Trump has been very vocal in his criticism of supra-nationalism, which runs counter to his notions of national sovereignty.
Blatant EU anti-Americanism and protectionism has also caught his attention, if not his ire.
Secretary of State Pompeo questioned the value of EU multilateralism in a very pointed speech in Brussels in December that got lots of attention in the European press.
It was not received well.
The new “downgrade” to IO status –meaning international organization status, is a huge slap in the face at the globalist entity that has ambitions to rival the US.
The EU however, truthfully, is NOT a government.
Nor is a nation state.
It is a member organization.
This all came ringing home at the Bush ’41 funeral when the EU was called out last, after all other REAL countries in attendance.
The EU is angry to put it lightly.
In Trump world however, they are having the last laugh!

Trump downgrades EU’s status in US from nation state to international organisation

The Trump administration has downgraded the diplomatic status of the EU in Washington, without informing Brussels, officials confirmed on Tuesday.
The downgrade reverses an Obama administration decision in 2016 to grant the EU an enhanced diplomatic role in Washington, and is being seen in Brussels as a snub reflecting a general antipathy to the EU in the Trump administration.
The change, potentially means that the EU mission would have less clout and access to US officials.
“We understand that there was a recent change in the way the diplomatic precedence list is implemented by the United States’ protocol.”, Maja Kocijančič, spokeswoman for EU foreign affairs and security policy, said.
She added: “We were not notified of any change.”
“We are discussing with the relevant services in the administration possible implications for the EU delegation in Washington.”
“We expect the diplomatic practice established some years ago to be observed.”, Kocijančič continued.
“This is a gratuitous and entirely unreasonable swipe at the EU by the Trump administration,” said Nicholas Burns, who was under secretary of state for political affairs in the George W Bush administration.
“It coincides with Trump’s campaign to depict the EU as a competitor, and not a partner of the US. It continues the administration’s delegitimization of international organizations and the supranational organization that is the EU.”
“Americans should remember that the EU is our largest trade partner and largest investor in our economy.”
“Trump’s entire policy toward the EU continues to be misguided and ineffective.”, Burns added.
Asked for comment, the US state department sent out an automatic message saying that due to the government shutdown, “communications with the media will be limited to events and issues involving the safety of human life or the protection of property, or those determined to be essential to national security”.
The US president has supported Brexit and has described the EU as a “foe”.
