School Resource Officer (SRO) Scott Peterson, the armed deputy stationed at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, stood outside the building during the shooting and refused to enter the building. He listened as the kids were being shot.


Today Officer Scott Peterson resigned from the Broward Sheriff’s department.

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Reuters)– The armed deputy assigned to the campus of a Florida high school during a deadly shooting last week stayed outside the building during the attack and failed to engage the shooter, the county sheriff said on Thursday.

As a consequence, Scott Peterson, on duty as the school resource officer at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, resigned from the department, said Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel, who earlier has suspended the officer from the force. He did not say if Peterson would face criminal charges.

Israel said he decided to suspend Peterson after viewing a video that showed the deputy’s actions during the rampage that killed 17 people. A former student Nikolas Cruz, 19, is accused of carrying out the attack with an AR-15-style assault weapon.

“What I saw was a deputy arrive at the west side of Building 12, take up a position and he never went in,” said Israel. The building is popularly known as “the freshman building.”

Israel said he would not release the video that shows Peterson’s actions at this time and may never do so, “depending on the prosecution and criminal case.” (read more)

The lack of action by Broward County Officer Scott Peterson is not an outlier, it is the norm. His conduct and cowardly behavior reveals a larger sentiment within a heavily politicized law enforcement agency. Politics is the filter for all decision-making.


REPEAT: Politics in Broward and Dade county is the filter for ALL decision-making.

Sheriff Israel is a political operative deep inside the Democrat political machine within Broward County. He is not alone. Israel is surrounded by similarly-minded police officers and law enforcement officials. Many of them are political operatives.


CTH prior experience with the top officials within law enforcement, schools and the institutional systems of government, within Broward and Miami-Dade Florida has given us exclusive insight into the politicization of multiple agencies. Not all of the line-level officers are as inept, corrupt and negligent as their supervisors; but the competent group is definitely in the minority.


After the shooting CTH warned about the political nature of the institutions of civic society in and around Broward and Dade county; and we predicted the underlying issues would begin to surface. The Broward County sheriff’s office, and the negligent deficiencies therein, is simply a symptom of much deeper -and far more dangerous- institutional corruption at almost every level of local government.

It was not accidental we were confronted in 2013 (during our research into the scope of the back-story of school and LEO corruption) by very angry law enforcement officials. We received direct threats from law enforcement officials to “back off”. On two very specific occasions at government offices, while filing FOIA requests, we became targets of retaliation and threats directly from law enforcement officials. A few of you might remember the details.


As bad as you might think the corruption within the Broward County School administration and Broward County Sheriff’s office might be, it’s worse.

Much, much worse than you can ever imagine.

Here’s what people don’t understand. When the county policy is intentionally constructed to ignore criminal behavior in schools, the Sheriff and School superintendent cannot rely on “law and order-minded” SRO’s to carry out the corrupt policy.

The SRO must carry a political hat and be able to intercept behavior, modify the action based on a specific policy, falsify documents, manipulate records etc, and engage in the system with an understanding of the unwritten goals. SRO’s are given political instructions NOT, I repeat, NOT given instructions to uphold laws and regulations.

The School Officers are the primary foot soldiers carrying out political policy. Engaging an active shooter on campus is the furthest thing from their skill-set you could imagine.

Security of school students is just not their role. The Broward County SRO is in place to protect the School System “policy”.

Deputy Peterson will live with the humiliation of his actions for the remaining days of his life! Not only did his cowardly actions bring disgrace and humiliation to himself, his family will also be forced to live with it. I couldn't imagine living with my wife, children, neighbors, and community under such circumstances. My recommendation to you, Deputy Peterson, is take your savings and buy a cabin deep in the Alaskan wilderness because you've shamed yourself beyond redemption!

Kerik: Broward Sheriff Should Resign

Former New York City Police Commissioner Bernard Kerik said it was "outrageous" if reports were confirmed that four Broward County sheriff's deputies failed to enter the Parkland, Florida, high school during a February 14 shooting that claimed 17 lives.

"It's outrageous. I've never heard anything like this before," Kerik told Newsmax on Saturday.

"If these reports are true, these deputies are constitutionally bound to engage the shooter to protect the students," Kerik added.

He said the deputies should be investigated by the Florida attorney general's office, not by an interagency probe of the Broward County Sheriff's Department. If they neglected their duty, he maintained they should be charged with "criminally negligent homicide."

Kerik, who was New York's police commissioner when the 9/11 terrorist attacks took place in 2001, said it was the nature and duty of law enforcement officers to "run into the buildings" during violent incidents.

Earlier on Saturday, Kerik called for Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel to "step down" following reports that four of his deputies failed to enter the Marjory Stoneman High School during the shooting.

"Yesterday after hearing that the resource officer failed to respond, I said that it couldn't get any worse, and now this. At this point, the Sheriff of Broward County should not be investigating this event - the Florida Attorney General should take over. The Sheriff should step down!" Kerik, who is now CEO of The Kerik Group, LLC, posted on his Facebook page Saturday.

"This department needs new leadership and obviously training. There are 17 people dead because of catastrophic failures by the local, state and federal government, but the cowardice by sworn law enforcement personnel is unfathomable," Kerik's post continued.

Israel has come under fire following the revelation on Friday that a sheriff's deputy assigned as the school's resource officer failed to enter the building while the shooting rampage was taking place. In addition, according to a CNN report on Friday, three additional sheriff's deputies on the scene purportedly remained outside during the incident.

In addition to those killed during the attack, another dozen people were injured. The 19-year-old suspect in the attack, Nikolas Cruz, is in custody and faces 17 counts of premeditated murder.

The incident has reignited the debate over gun reform. Israel, a vocal proponent of tighter gun control legislation, hammered National Rifle Association spokeswoman Dana Loesch during a CNN town hall forum on Wednesday over gun laws.

"You just told this group of people that you are standing up for them," Israel told Loesch and repeated the sentiment on Twitter Friday. "You're not standing up for them until you say, 'I want less weapons.'"

"No Sheriff Israel you were the one that didn't PROTECT these children and that is your job," Loesch fired back Friday on Twitter. "You run the largest fully accredited sheriff's office in the United States, yet your office failed this community."

The shooting was far from the first time local authorities were made aware of Cruz's propensity to violence. Records indicate they and the FBI were alerted to him at least eight times over the past two years. As recently as November 29, the family that took Cruz in after his mother's death told the sheriff's office Cruz had threatened to "get his gun" after a fight with their son, and on January 5, a caller told the FBI tip line that Cruz could become a school shooter based on an online post allegedly saying he had a "desire to kill people." That message was never passed on to the Miami FBI field office.

Peterson's statement through the union official said he did a good job, "securing the perimeter", what does that mean? Does that mean stationing police officers around the site to catch the killer or kill him when he runs out of the building? Is that the function Peterson and the 3 other Deputies thought they were doing, "securing the perimeter?"

Sheriff Israel knew this day one. He knew this within minutes of the shooting. Either that's the procedure, someone gave that order, or you have 4 Deputies who violated procedure, not just Peterson.

Sheriff Israel does need to resign for a lot of reasons. He was not honest about his deputies and first responders in his comments to the media at the press conferences. He was political in the CNN Town Hall. He's thrown Deputy Peterson under the bus while protecting 3 other Deputies. He's also called in the silence of the "thin blue line" to conceal these facts. We only know about them because the Coral Springs officers who actually entered the building spilled the beans.

That isn't going to fly in Florida.
