Because they live all over the state but must all be in Sacramento to conduct business. They can't give up their homes because they must live in the district to run for election from there. The employees of most companies who must travel away from home for their company business get an expense account.
They already are over paid. They can afford to pay their own expenses. $173 ???? Have they ever heard of net meetings? They dont have to go to Sacto everyday. Plus some of them dont live that far from Sacto. And just because some employees of private companies get it does not mean that they should get it. They are public servants and we are in a DEPRESSION!!

They dont have to go to Sacto everyday.
When the legislature is in session they usually meet 5 days a week, but sometimes 6 or 7 days a week. They don't get their expense money for days that they aren't in session.

I'm not trying to justify it, just EXPLAIN it.

Yes I understand. But right now they should not be receiving it at all. They make enough money to pay their own way during this time. And certainly they should have to pay tax on it. And why cant they meet over the internet? They dont have to be face to face.

For the same reason that Congress doesn't "Meet on the internet".

They can use technology for their meetings. There is no reason not to do this.

I think our best plan of action is, not matter what state we are in, all must start examing the perks we end up giving politicos who work very hard in our worst interest.

Like the early days of the Republic, the delegates usually could only afford to stay in seedy inns. Because they weren't payed princely sums, and have expendatures payed with tax money by the people.

The reason these people are are not in touch with the everyday American is their office has become a position of Divine Inheritance. That's why the two words that should never be used in the same sentence is career, and the other is politician.

So I say, let them pay their own way. Not at our expense, but theirs.

    From your other post JohnDoe2:

Audra Strickland (R-Thousand Oaks), who terms out of the Assembly in 2010, is running for Ventura County treasurer-tax collector next year, though she has no background in accounting or finance. The post has a salary of $150,445.

How the hell do you run for a position which you have no experience doing like this? Oh, wait a minute. The Oval Office is occupied by someone who's got no experience except in bending over it seems............

But it is a lucrative salary.
