Despite the continuing impact of the recession, California was ranked last year as the world's eighth-largest economy and easily outpaced Texas and New York as the nation's top economy, according to a monthly report from the Center for the Continuing Study of the California Economy.
Based on the latest data from the U.S. Department of Commerce, California had a gross state product of $1.9 trillion in 2009, which would place it only slightly behind England and Italy as one of the world's top economies.
In comparison, Texas and New York, which are nearly tied at $1.1 trillion, ranked as the world's 14th and 15th largest economies,
On a regional basis, if San Diego County were an independent country, it would rank as the world's 45th-largest economy, sandwiched between Nigeria and Pakistan.
