Caltrans yards in Inland Empire suffer $50,000 in metal losses over weekend

RIVERSIDE – Caltrans maintenance yards across the Inland Empire lost about $50,000 in metal-related thefts over the long Memorial Day weekend, a spokeswoman for the state Department of Transportation said Wednesday.
Thieves hit Caltrans yards in Banning, Bloomington, Corona and Riverside between Friday and Monday, Caltrans spokeswoman Terri Kasinga said.
A sprinkler system along Interstate 10 through San Bernardino was disabled by thieves who stripped it of at least $5,000 worth of sprinkler heads and copper wiring, she said.
