I've found that when discussing the plight of the poor with liberals, they are literally incapable of understanding the long-term policies that have created such a large disadvantaged class. They can't see beyond the short-term suffering the poor would endure without welfare to understand that: if "allowed" more freedom, less manipulation of currency and the economy by the government and central bankers, less bureaucracy that keeps the poor dependent, and less hindered by a justice system set up to hurt the poor, people would enjoy much more prosperity. Facepalm
