Wisconsin teen invents device to protect students during a shooting

One high schooler has come up with a device to prevent active shooters from getting inside classrooms – and to keep students safe.

He calls it the "JustinKase." It's a product made of steel that latches to a door frame to bar entry.

“Unlike other products, JustinKase does not allow a door to open even a crack which means students & staff can remain safe while emergency personnel race to the scene,” creator Justin Rivard, a student at Somerset High School in Wisconsin, explains on his website.

Rivard came up with the idea for the safety product, which he sells online for $95, two years ago – when he was just 15. He spent months refining it.

“You can lock a door with a lock, it can get shot out,” Rivard told KARE. “You can lock a door with this, it can’t get shot out. You can’t get around it.”

The 17-year-old is now reaching out to schools to spread the word about his product.

His own school already ordered 50 of them, one for each room in the building, according to KARE.

“We immediately, within a week of having these, went through an entire drill, all throughout the building, really walking through students and staff,” Somerset's principal, Shannon Donnelly, told KARE.

Wisconsin's Grantsburg School District also ordered more than 50 devices.

Rivard has yet to discover anyone able to open a classroom door when JustinKase is set up.

“He truly believes that this device is going to save lives,” Donnelly said.

Rivard said he hopes no school will actually have to use it, but "just in case you need it, it’ll be there," he told KARE.

This is a great idea, it's in place at schools, it works, every school needs to start buying and installing them. But safety starts of course with proper doors with automatic closures and automatic locks and keeping the doors locked during class-time, you also need armed guards and/or faculty ... just in case.

My problem with arming teachers is if everyone has a gun...the police come in...how do they know who the "good guys" are?

They really need to think this through before allowing all these guns in the school. Stop knee-jerk reacting to these problems with emotions. Use your brains!

Also, many...not all...of these teachers are mentally deranged themselves. How many men and women have had sex with children? How many have worn disgusting outfits against our President? How many push their political ideas on students? How many have problems at home? A lot to consider before allowing them all to carry.

Look at that guy Jerry what's his name, the coach, who took students in the basement and had sex with them. All the teachers knew...they did nothing about it!

What if a student goes bezerk and tackles the teachers and take their guns. Now these self entitled punks are protesting, screaming in our streets and they are ticking time bombs. Thank Obama and our Governor's and Mayor's who disobey our laws for that...they are NO role models for our youth.

Other ways to secure the building such as these locks. Have TV monitors and switches to lock down doors...like prisons do.

Automatic text alerts to teachers of the situation...use technology...not concealed carry. Or have a light up message board in the classrooms where a message comes across alerting the teachers and students what is going on. Like those you see on the highway issuing Amber Alerts. But a small ticker screen.

I am against teachers having guns on the property. It will put the police lives, and their own lives in danger.

The students won't know which faculty or personnel is armed and which isn't. Not all teachers would be armed. Just those who want to serve as armed faculty to round out a proper coverage of the facility. Maybe 6 to 8. It would be people who already have conceal and carry permits, are experienced with guns, and who are willing to go to the shooting range to practice every week. Or they can hire armed security guards, or use a combination of 3 guards and 5 faculty/personnel.

Police would know that faculty/armed security guards are involved with security at the facility. Police would also be helping with the training, which they'll need, because just because you have a gun doesn't prepare you for the decision to use it, so they'll need to be sure whoever they authorize to do this can pull the trigger and take the life. Not everyone can.

Once the fanaticism of "gun free zones" is put to bed, the freer school personnel will be to work on effective ways to secure the schools and defend the lives of everyone. Police can't do it, they can't get there in time.

And of course it would be each school's decision. I wasn't aware of it when I was in school, but I found out a few years ago, that my school had guns all over the place. Administrators had them, coaches had them, some teachers who had served in the military had them, some bus drivers had them, and our janitor had one.

Americans do best when they're free to do. It's when we're restricted from our own common sense by stupid laws and policies that we get all gummed up and things don't go well.

No guns for teachers.

Use technology. Have cameras in hallways. Security guards on the TV monitors. Like in casinos and prisons.

Amber Alert ticker tape on electronic board in every classroom, like you see on the freeway. A silent alert you can read. Have the message instantly go to ticker tape and the teachers phone alerts what is going on.

This murderer pulled the Fire Alarm. No one knew there was NO fire. The teachers were not going to come out with guns blazing because they did NOT know what was going on. The ticker tape and phone alert would have let them know this.

The "ticker tape" alert on the screen in the classroom would have notified them immediately of the message. "False alarm...Code Red...get in classroom and lock doors".

Those are "drills" that can and should be done.

There is no way that teachers should be armed in our schools.
