Chavez: Venezuela to buy more tanks

Chavez: Venezuela to buy more tanks

    The Associated Press
    12:52 p.m. August 5, 2009

CARACAS, Venezuela — President Hugo Chavez says his government plans to buy dozens of tanks because Venezuela feels threatened by pending deal to increase the U.S. military presence in Colombia.

Chavez says "several tank battalions" could be acquired to boost defenses as neighboring Colombia negotiates an agreement to let U.S. forces use three airfields and two navy bases there.

The socialist leader did not elaborate during a news conference on Wednesday, but Venezuela is currently negotiating the purchase of tanks and armored vehicles from Russia.

Venezuela and Russia have signed weapons contracts worth more than US$4 billion since 2005.

Colombia says Venezuela should not worry about Americans using the military bases.

NO. They are international waters off our coast, just like our subs are in international waters off their coast. Just like always.

Yes, me. The Russians know that Obama is an inexperienced liberal (like JFK was when he first took office), and perhaps are moving quickly to take advantage of the situation just like they did with the "Bay of Pigs". Only now the Russians and the Chinese also have supporters in the leaders of large nations such as Venezuela, Bolivia, etc., in addition to Cuba. We have NO major alllies in Latin America now. I suppose it is possible that a combination of forces could actually be assembled to march up through Central America and Mexico and take us over: most of our own military (including, now, our National Guard) are in Europe, Korea, or the Middle East. At "best", perhaps the Russians just are trying to test the new Administration's strength with the assurance that there will be no real confrontation. However, there are so many "players" in the mix now (including Al Quaeda), all of them with significant presences in Latin America.
