City records 300th homicide with 13 over Father's Day weekend

The city recorded its 300th homicide this weekend and went on to record six others over a 60-hour period that saw 59 people shot, 13 fatally, from Friday afternoon through early Monday morning.

So far this year, about 1,800 people have been shot across the city and more than 200 of those wounded have died of their wounds, according to records kept by the Chicago Tribune.

A total of 306 people have been killed this year by shooting, stabbing or other means, Tribune records show.

A 3-year-old boy was among the wounded who survived the weekend shootings. Police said he’s in critical condition. The boy was shot in the right shoulder near East 61st Street and South Kimbark Avenue in the Woodlawn neighborhood at 6:15 p.m. Sunday, police said. The boy was in a car seat when an unknown attacker fired shots at the car, police said. People in the vehicle managed to get the boy to University of Chicago Medical Center. He was then transferred to Comer Children's Hospital in critical condition.

Five people were fatally shot and nine others were hurt between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning. Four of the fatalities occurred in seven hours. The fatalities included a 16-year-old boy who was killed in West Englewood about 9:05 p.m. Friday. He was in the front passenger seat of a car driving through an alley in the 6500 block of South Hamilton Avenue when two males came up and fired shots, according to police.
At least 28 people were wounded, three fatally, in shootings from 8:30 a.m. Saturday to 4:30 a.m. Sunday, the equivalent of somebody shot every 43 minutes. One fatal shooting occurred during a possible murder-suicide in Hyde Park about 9:50 a.m. Saturday, police said. Police responded to the 1400 block of East 54th Street for a well-being check and found a 65-year-old woman with a gunshot wound to the head. A man, 73, also was found shot in the head.

Five more people were killed and seven others, including the 3-year-old boy, were wounded from Sunday afternoon to early Monday. One of the fatalities Sunday was a 21-year-old man shot with “possibly an AK-47’’ assault rifle in the Back of the Yards neighborhood, according to police.

Police intially said the victim was 17. The 21-year-old, who the Cook County medical examiner's office said was Salvador Suarez, was walking east in the 1700 block of West 46th Street around 1:30 p.m. when a light-colored, four-door Saturn pulled up and fired shots with a "high-powered semi-automatic weapon," striking the victim as he attempted to run, said Eugene Roy, chief of detectives for the Chicago police.

Suarez lived in the 4500 block of South Hermitage Avenue, according to the medical examiner's office. Police are investigating whether the rifle has been used in any other shootings. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene, and the shooting was believed to be gang related, Roy said.

A Chicago police officer also shot and wounded a male who allegedly pointed gun at him near Humboldt Park on Sunday evening. The male suspect, whose age was not immediately available, was shot in the lower extremities, and he was listed in serious-but-stable condition at Stroger Hospital.

Over the course of the year, the Harrison District on the city's West Side has tallied more homicides than any other district in the city, with 37. The Englewood disrict on the South Side had 36. The Austin District on the West Side, the Gresham District on the South Side and the Deering District on the South and Southwest sides each tallied 24.

The Englewood District had two homicides this weekend, and the Harrison District had one.

The mainstream American media is, again, happily hitting the Black Lives Matter crack pipe in its pernicious pursuit of high ratings. These blood-lusting junkies were nowhere to be found when, with haunting predictability, Chicago news headline after headline detailed the carnage that has consumed dozens of communities in that city where black men kill each other with terrifying regularity.

Where were these Black Lives Matter protesters after the slaying of Chicago’s little Tyshawn Lee, the 9-year-old lured into an alley and shot to death by a black man seeking gang-related vengeance against his father?

Did little Tyshawn’s murder at the hands of a black gangster–an all too common occurrence in Chicago–not warrant wall-to-wall news coverage or Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson-style calls for “justice”?
No.

Why?
Because the ugly truth behind #BlackLivesMatter is that black people killing other black people does nothing to advance its political power in the same way that one white cop killing a black criminal can.

Despite the media’s overindulgence on white cops killing blacks, there is still a far-larger amount of black bodies being sent to morgues by black killers. Here’s five devastating facts, liberals can’t deny, that prove it.

FACT 1. Over 1,400 more black Americans murdered other blacks in two years than were lynched from 1882 to 1968.

According to FBI data, 4,906 black people murdered other blacks in 2010 and 2011. That is 1,460 more black Americans killed by other blacks in two years than were lynched from 1882 to 1968, according to the Tuskegee Institute.

FACT 2. Black People (mostly men) commit a grossly disproportionate amount of crime.

In 2012, white males were 38 percent of the population and committed 4,582 murders. That same year, black males were just 6.6 percent of the population but committed a staggering 5,531 murders.

In other words: black people–at just a fifth of the size–committed almost 1,000 more murders than their white counterparts.

The figures above highlight a horrific truth that black racialists and white liberals routinely ignore: Lawbreaking black Americans, young black males particularly, put themselves in close proximity to (mostly white male) police officers at rates sometimes five to 10 times higher than whites. This is a recipe for disaster. Thusly….

FACT 3. Despite making up just 13% of the population, blacks committed half of homicides in the United States for nearly 30 years.

DOJ statistics show that between 1980 and 2008, black people committed 52% of homicides.

In 2013, black criminals committed 38% of the murders. Whites accounted for just 31 percent.

There are five times fewer black people than white people in America and, yet, they consistently carry out a larger share of the crimes? Given this rate, it’s no wonder that there aren’t more assistances where cops kill black criminals.

FACT 4. Chicago’s death toll is almost equal to that of both wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, combined.

There have been almost as many deaths in one American city as there have been in the two major wars carried out by the U.S. military this century.

Chicago’s death toll from 2001–November, 26 2015 stands at 7,401. The combined total deaths during Operation Iraqi Freedom (2003-2015: 4,815) and Operation Enduring Freedom/Afghanistan (2001-2015: 3,506), total 8,321.

FACT 5. It would take cops 40 years to kill as many black men as have died at the hands of others black men in 2012 alone.

University of Toledo criminologist Dr. Richard R. Johnson examined the latest crime datafrom the FBI’s Supplementary Homicide Reports and Centers for Disease Control and found that an average of 4,472 black men were killed by other black men annually between Jan. 1, 2009, and Dec. 31, 2012.

Professor Johnson’s research further concluded that 112 black men died from both justified and unjustified police-involved killings annually during this same period.

At least seven people were wounded in shootings since 6 a.m. Wednesday on the West and South sides, police said.

The most recent shooting happened in the Grand Crossing neighborhood about 4:40 p.m. A 17-year-old was shot in the foot and taken to Stroger Hospital in good condition with a foot wound. He was shot near 71st Street and Eberhart Avenue.
Four people were shot after 1 p.m. in the 3100 block of West Warren Boulevard in the city's East Garfield Park neighborhood, police said.
Preliminary reports said at least four people were wounded at the scene, said Officer Michelle Tannehill, a Chicago police spokeswoman. A 41-year-old man was shot in the leg and torso. He was taken to Stroger Hospital where his condition was stabilized. Another man, also 41, was shot in the left foot. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital where his condition was stabilized, Tannehill said.
A 47-year-old man suffered a wound to the right arm, and he was taken to Stroger, and a 20-year-old man was shot in the right foot. He went to Mount Sinai.
Shortly before noon, a 27-year-old man was shot in the 600 block of South St. Louis Avenue in the same neighborhood, said Officer Nicole Trainor, a Chicago police spokeswoman.
According to preliminary reports, the man suffered a graze wound to the face and a gunshot wound to the torso, Trainor said.


Man dead, 11 hurt in shootings on West, South sides

There was no immediate information available about his condition or where he went for treatment.
Earlier Wednesday, a 23-year-old man was shot in the Chatham neighborhood on the South Side. That shooting happened about 6:10 a.m. in the 700 block of East 91st Street, Trainor said.
The man suffered a gunshot wound to the left leg and ran to another location, where he called police. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was listed in good condition, Trainor said.

More than half of those guns came from outside the state.

Lax gun laws in Indiana fuel gun violence in Chicago

Nearly 60 percent of Chicago crime guns were first purchased outside Illinois; 20 percent came from Indiana

CROWN POINT, Indiana — At a gun show on Indiana’s fairgrounds, hundreds of people filed past tables of firearms — World War Two relics, handguns, hunting rifles, and combat-grade automatic weapons — sprinkled with a selection of knives, Nazi artifacts, Confederate flags, dozens of anti-Obama and anti-Islam bumper stickers, and t-shirts with slogans including “Infidel” and “I want YOU to learn English.”

“You got something to sell in that bag, buddy?,” one vendor asked a passerby at the December show. Guns aren’t just for sale — you can trade yours in, and vendors are buying.

Indiana’s gun laws are relatively simple.

Federally licensed “brick and mortar” gun dealers are required to perform standard background checks, while vendors selling their “private collections” at gun shows are not. An Indiana resident could walk out of the Crown Point gun show with a legally purchased assault rifle that same day — without a background check — less than an hour from Chicago, where assault rifles are banned. Handguns are subject to different regulations in Indiana.

Indiana’s Republican-controlled government has rolled back firearm regulations in recent years.

In July 2015, a new law went into effect that made it legal for residents to own sawed-off shotguns.

People typically saw off part of the gun barrel to make a gun more concealable and maneuverable.

When asked to comment for this report, a spokesperson for Indiana Governor Mike Pence directed Al Jazeera to a tweet written by the governor in early January that said: “Second Amendment unambiguously affirms the right to keep and bear arms. I will continue to support the Constitutional rights of Hoosiers.”

Chicago Police point to Indiana as a major source of guns recovered at crime scenes, indicating that the state’s lax gun purchasing laws, through gun trafficking, are fueling the city’s violence. Gun violence in Chicago remains high, with more than 2,300 shootings in 2015 alone and a homicide count of 484, including the November murder of a 9-year-old boy targeted in gang violence.

“You can be in the city of Chicago and be closer to a gun show in Indiana than you are to downtown,” said Sarah Emmons, a researcher at the University of Chicago’s Chicago Crime Lab.

“Having such dramatically different regulations in such close proximity makes it really, really easy for folks [to bring illegal guns into Chicago].”

Emmons and Julia Quinn, another researcher at the crime lab, said research has shown very few crime guns in Chicago come from federally licensed dealers. A 2015 study by the institute estimated that only 11 percent of crime guns recovered in Chicago were purchased from federally licensed vendors, which require background checks, and that many were passed or sold through social networks. They cited straw purchases — where one person buys a gun for a person who cannot legally purchase one — as a major contributor to the city’s underground gun market.

“I think that speaks to the regulations in Indiana, and why it’s quite obvious why a gang member might go into Indiana where they can buy guns quite easily at a show or private sale,” Quinn said.

According to a 2014 report from the Chicago Police Department, 60 percent of the guns recovered at crime scenes in the city between 2009 and 2012 Between 2009 and 2013, almost 60 percent of guns used to commit crimes in Chicago were first purchased outside of Illinois.

Each state in the country contributed at least one gun used in a Chicago crime. — nearly 20 percent came from Indiana, the second-highest state after Illinois. The City of Chicago’s regulations are stricter than the rest of the state.

“The carnage in Chicago is still being driven by guns that are coming from elsewhere,” Quinn said.

In May 2014, a federal judge sentenced a man to 17 years in prison for illegally selling guns on the street in Chicago, which he had legally purchased in Indiana.

“I try to bring out the point on the illegal trafficking and the number of guns going to Chicago,” said Edmund Smith, president of Hoosiers Concerned About Gun Violence, a group that advocates for gun control in Indiana, referencing the gun control discussion there. “I think there is some awareness, certainly, but I couldn’t say otherwise.”

Smith’s organization is pushing for universal background checks — including at gun shows and private sales — an assault rife and armor-piercing ammunition ban, and a limit on the number of handguns that can be purchased within a 30-day period.

Back in Crown Point — and in Shipshewana, Indiana, which hosted a gun show on the same day in mid December — all those who were asked to comment declined to speak with Al Jazeera for this report. Central Indiana Gun Shows, which facilitated the Crown Point show, did not respond to requests for comment.

National Rife Association spokesperson Lars Dalseide said in a statement emailed to Al Jazeera that other factors are fueling Chicago’s epidemic of violence.

“The violent crime problem in Chicago has nothing to do with the gun laws in Indiana,” he said. “There are countless reports in the Chicago media about low prosecution rates and the short sentences handed down to repeat offenders.

Instead of treating the law-abiding gun owners of Indiana like criminals they should start treating the criminals in Chicago like criminals.”

Emmons and Quinn maintain that guns are a major contributor to the lethality of crime in the United States.

“Evidence and data from other countries who have similar rates of some violent crimes, but very different rates of homicide, suggest that guns probably are a big part of the problem,” Quinn said. “Designing more effective enforcement strategies, or reasonable gun safety regulations, would make a big difference in the short term. So why not give it a shot?”

Numerous studies in recent years have found that a higher number of guns does not lead to a decrease in crime, and actually is associated with higher rates of violent crimes. A 2014 study from Stanford found that eight states saw their homicide rates increase after passing right-to-carry laws in the early 2000s.

Some estimates place the number of guns in the United States at more than 350 million — or, one for every person in the United States.

“I think that guns don’t help,” Emmons said. “And the prevalence of guns is really causing a lot of the lethality.”

1 killed, 13 wounded in Wednesday shootings

One man was killed and at least 13 other people were wounded in shootings on Chicago’s South and West sides Wednesday.

A man was killed and a woman was wounded in an Auburn Gresham neighborhood shooting early Wednesday on the South Side.

The pair were sitting on a porch about 12:35 p.m. in the 8800 block of South Ada when a male walked out of a gangway nearby and fired shots in their directions, according to Chicago Police.
Stanley Boston, 35, was shot in the neck and foot, and was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where he was pronounced dead at 1:22 a.m., according to police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office. He lived on the same block where the shooting happened.
The woman, 22, suffered a graze wound to the foot and was taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital and Health Care Center, where her condition was stabilized, police said.
Most recently, a 16-year-old boy was critically wounded in a Little Village shooting on the Southwest Side.
The boy was walking in the street in the 2300 block of South Albany about 10:45 p.m. when someone shot him twice in the abdomen and once in the left arm, according to police. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in critical condition.
Earlier Wednesday night, a man was wounded in a Greater Grand Crossing neighborhood shooting. The 23-year-old was walking in the 7100 block of South Vincennes at 8:19 p.m. when he was struck by gunfire, police said. He was shot in the abdomen and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
An hour earlier, another man was shot in the same neighborhood. The 23-year-old was shot at 7:22 p.m. in the 7300 block of South St. Lawrence Avenue, according to police. He was shot in the leg and taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition was stabilized.
A 17-year-old boy was shot in the right side in the 7100 block of South Eberhart in Greater Grand Crossing about 4:40 p.m., police said. He was taken to Stroger Hospital, where his condition stabilized.
A 29-year-old was in “an altercation over a parking spot” in the 4300 block of West West End about 2:55 p.m. when he was shot in the hip, police said. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital in good condition.
Four people were wounded in a drive-by shooting Wednesday afternoon in the East Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. Shots were fired by three people in a light-colored vehicle in the 3100 block of West Warren at 1:07 p.m., according to police.
A 41-year-old man with gunshot wounds to the leg and torso and a 47-year-old man who was shot in the right arm and both thighs were taken to Stroger Hospital, where their conditions were stabilized, police said. A 20-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the right foot and a 41-year-old man with a gunshot wound to the left foot were taken to Mount Sinai Hospital, where their conditions were also stabilized.

A man was shot early Wednesday in the Burnside neighborhood on the South Side. The 23-year-old was shot in the leg about 6:10 a.m. in the 700 block of East 91st Street, according to police. He then ran to the 9100 block of South Cottage Grove, where authorities were called. He was taken in good condition to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn.
A man was taken into custody after he shot a woman during a robbery at a gas station early Wednesday in the West Garfield Park neighborhood on the West Side. At 4:07 a.m., the 55-year-old woman was at a gas station in the 600 block of South Independence when a man walked up, pulled out a handgun and announced a robbery, according to police.
The woman was shot in the leg and taken in good condition to Mount Sinai Hospital, police said. The man tried to run away after the shooting, but a Chicago Police sergeant nearby spotted the suspect as he was fleeing and subsequently apprehended him. A weapon was recovered.
The man, 38, was taken into custody and charges against him were pending Wednesday night.
