Union official blames Remington Arms expansion in Alabama on NY SAFE Act

Workers return to the Remington Arms Co. factory in the Herkimer County village of Ilion after a lunch break in January 2013. The president of the labor union that represents 1,180 workers at the plant said Remington's plans to open a factory in Alabama bodes badly for Ilion and blames New York's Safe Act ban on assault weapons. Ilion, N.Y. — A union official said Saturday the Remington Arms Co.'s decision to open a manufacturing plant in Alabama does not bode well for Ilion, and he's blaming New York's SAFE Act restrictions on assault weapons.
"It can't be good," said Fran Madore, president of United Mine Workers Local 717, which represents 1,180 of the 1,300 Remington employees in Ilion. "How can it be good?"
Madore said plant officials told him they wanted to meet with him Monday. They did not say what they wanted to talk about, but Madore said he assumes it will be about the company's reported plans to open a 500,000-square-foot manufacturing plant in Huntsville, Ala.
AL.com reported Saturday that the Huntsville facility could employ up to 2,000 people. It said details could be revealed on Monday about plans for a Remington facility in a former Chrysler plant near Huntsville International Airport.
Military Times reported that the company's expansion in Alabama would not affect Remington's operations in Ilion. But Madore said he's afraid the company has soured on New York because of the passage of the SAFE Act, which bans assault weapons such as the AR-15 made by Remington.
Madore said he's worried the company will move jobs out of Ilion, the Herkimer County village where the company has been making firearms since 1816.
"The SAFE Act has been a terrible thing from the beginning," he said. "You'd think New York would be doing everything to keep us. Instead, it passes a law that cripples us."
Remington and other firearms makers can still manufacture assault weapons in New York, but they can't sell them inside the state. New York lawmakers, at the urging of Gov. Andrew Cuomo, imposed the restrictions after a man armed with an assault rifle massacred 20 children and six staff members at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., in December 2012.
Remington has not given any public indications that it is planning to move out of Ilion. In fact, it has spent more than $20 million on new equipment for its factory in Ilion and added 560 jobs at the plant in the past few years.

Irony. Unions support liberal politicians who push anti-gun legislation, so gun manufacturer Remington is moving their plant to gun-friendly and union unfriendly Arkansas.

It’s Offical: Remington to Expand in Huntsville Ala.

Gun company cites Alabama’s support of Second Amendment in decision making process

The world’s largest gun manufacturer, Remington Arms, officially announced today it would expand and build a new plant in Huntsville, Ala., creating 2,000 new jobs.

Remington’s CEO George Kollitides said during a Monday press conference that Alabama’s strong support of the Second Amendment is something that his company has in common with the state.

“We undertook a very rigorous process,” he said. Site selection factors such as workforce, quality of life, and economic climate all played a role in addition to the state’s support for gun rights.

Alabama Governor Robert Bentley said the pro-business attitude of the state, the cooperative spirit for business, and the strong support of the Second Amendment were deciding factors for Remington to come to Huntsville. He also said 24 states were vying for Remington’s new plant.

“Today’s announcement will create more than 2,000 jobs in Huntsville, and reflects a statewide capital investment of $110 million. Our relationship with Remington is just beginning, and I look forward to a continued partnership with the company,” Bentley said.

Remington, which employs 1,200 workers at its Illion, N.Y.-based facility, has been searching for a new site for the past year, as previously reported by the Washington Free Beacon.

Yellowhammer News first reported Remington’s expansion over the weekend, citing unnamed sources. Critics of New York governor Andrew Cuomo cited his opposition to gun rights as a crimp in the state’s economy.

“Remington’s decision to locate 2K jobs in AL is another devastating blow to NY’s economy that is already failing under Governor Cuomo,” Republican Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino tweeted Sunday.

A Cuomo spokesman responded to critics who blasted the governor and his SAFE Act for driving jobs from New York.

“Some are misinformed, others gleefully spreading misinformation, but to be clear, no Remington jobs are leaving NY,” tweeted Rich Azzopardi tweeted on Saturday night.

The union that represents most of the workers at Remington seemed to indicate otherwise and also criticized Cuomo and the SAFE Act. He said the decision was a bad sign for the New York plant.

Remington Sends Cuomo A Message With Alabama Announcement

February 17, 2014 by Ben Bullard

Gun maker Remington announced a plan to invest $110 million in a manufacturing facility in Huntsville, Ala., today — a clear signal to the ruling class in its home State of New York that it’s setting down roots in a political climate that values the 2nd Amendment.
At the start of its lengthy, 24-State search for a new facility, Remington made it clear that its growing base of operations won’t affect its New York employees. But the company also made it clear that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo’s enthusiastic embrace of knee-jerk gun control legislation signaled a need for firearms companies to begin looking out for the future.
A union official representing Remington employees admitted as much, telling The Post-Standard over the weekend the gun-grabbing political atmosphere in New York “can’t be good” for the company’s future there — even though it’s been a fixture in New York since 1816.
“No question, it helps that we believe in the Second Amendment Right to Bear Arms,” said Alabama legislator Mo Brooks. “It also helps that we don’t believe in class-warfare and envy, rather, we believe in applauding success that is hard-earned, as Remington’s has been.”
Many of the new facility’s 2,000 jobs are expected to pay between $40,000 and $50,000 (not counting benefits), according to Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle.
