I really like Anchor Hocking products. They are very sturdy and don't chip like the crap from China. Bad news is, the are available at Wal-Mart. The irony in that.

Hey at least Wal_Mart does sell something. I could sell them to you but it would cost you twice as much as Wally World because I obviously do not have the buying power they have.

Recall: Walmart Recalls Chinese Made Flip Flops

    Posted: 10:45 AM Sep 12, 2007

Wal-mart stores across the country are pulling flip-flops made in china after customers complained of rashes or burns developed on their feet.

A Texas woman says her feet started showing signs of a rash about three weeks after she started wearing the sandals in July.

As the scarring worsened into the exact pattern of the flip flop straps, she filed a complaint with Wal-mart.

Wal-mart says it will now do more testing on the flip flops.

The rash is probably caused by formaldehyde

EU May Ban Chinese Goods Over Safety

EU May Ban Chinese Goods Over Safety
Associated Press 09.12.07, 1:04 PM ET

    BRUSSELS, Belgium -

The European Union gave China a "last warning" Wednesday, saying the bloc may ban a range of Chinese products, including toys, that fail to comply with health and safety standards by October.

Next month, Beijing is expected to respond to the EU's consumer protection worries over products made in China, a center for the world's toy-making industry that exported $7.5 billion worth of toys last year.

Questions about the quality of Chinese toys, food and other exports have grown in recent months after a string of product recalls and import bans.

"This is the last warning," EU Consumer Protection Commissioner Meglena Kuneva told a European Parliament committee."If there's an unsatisfactory report in October we will (impose) the next layer of measures. Among them is a ban on products."

She did not specify what might be banned, but another EU official said that products concerned could include toys and some spare parts.

The EU has received three reports from the Chinese on health and safety issues, and said none have answered its concerns.

Mattel Inc. (nyse: MAT - news - people ), the largest American toy company, has issued three product recalls this summer for Chinese-made toys, removing millions of units of Barbie doll accessories, toy cars and other products because of unsafe levels of lead or magnets that too easily detach.

Seeking to tamp down public outrage over the recalls, Mattel's CEO acknowledged Wednesday that the company made mistakes by not closely overseeing subcontractors in China whose toys didn't meet U.S. safety standards.

On Tuesday, China signed an agreement to prohibit the use of lead paint on toys exported to the U.S.

Meanwhile, the U.S. Congress is pondering measures to improve oversight by boosting funding and stiffening fines, and President Bush in July created a Cabinet-level panel to recommend ways to guarantee safety of imported food and other products brought into the country.

The head of China's product safety agency pledged Wednesday that China will make safer toys in time for the busy holiday buying season.

EU Commissioner Kuneva said no broader new legislation was necessary to protect the European market from Chinese goods. Instead, she called on EU member states to make the most of existing tools, such as an early warning system that alerts governments to faulty products.

"At this stage, there is no need for knee-jerk reactions requiring rafts of new legislation," she said.

56,000 lunch boxes in Calif. recalled for lead
Items were distributed by state to promote healthy eating, officials say

    Updated: 8:29 p.m. ET Sept 20, 2007

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - About 56,000 lunch boxes distributed by California in an effort to promote healthful eating may contain lead, and state officials Thursday urged consumers not to use them.

Tests found elevated levels of lead in three of the boxes, which were made in China and given out at health fairs and other events, said officials of the state Department of Public Health. They carried a logo saying, “Eat fruits and vegetables and be active.â€

Banning China: How American-Style Capitalism Led to Toxic Products
New America Media, News Analysis, Xujun Eberlein, Posted: Sep 19, 2007

Editor’s Note: On a recent trip from America to China, New America Media commentator Xujun Eberlein noticed how similar the two nations have become since her youth during Mao's reign. But the American demand for goods has created some kinks in China’s new capitalist system.

BEIJING -- Five months after the deaths of 14 animals in the United States were linked to China-exported pet food ingredients, Zhang Shuhong – the owner of Lida Toy Company in Foshan, China – hung himself in his own factory’s storage room. This incident occurred two weeks after Mattel recalled 967,000 toys made by Lida.

There was much buzz on Chinese websites that the recall led to Lida’s predicament and, in turn, Zhang’s suicide. The exact cause notwithstanding, these trade skirmishes between the two giant nations – from food fights to toy fights – are a result of rapidly transforming capitalism in China.

Today the label “Made in Chinaâ€

Toy garden tools, trains latest 'made in China' recalls

Toy garden tools, trains latest 'made in China' recalls

Wed Sep 26, 5:27 PM ET

WASHINGTON (AFP) - US retailing giant Target Corp. announced a voluntary recall of Chinese-made toy gardening tools and children's lawn furniture containing "excessive levels of lead," the company said in a statement Wednesday.

The recall affects some 350,000 toys bearing the "Happy Giddy Gardening Tools" and "Sunny Patch Children's Chairs" logos, the Minneapolis, Minnesota-based retailer said, in the latest of a spate of recalls that have sullied the "Made-in-China" brand in the United States.

Meanwhile, the RC2 Corporation on Wednesday announced that it too would voluntarily recall five "Thomas and Friends" wooden toy train items made in China, due to lead paint levels that exceed US Consumer Product Safety Commission standards.

The new recalls, RC2 said, affect up to 200,000 toy units distributed domestically and some 69,000 units sold outside the United States.

Those recalls follow a forced recall in June of 1.5 million "Thomas and Friends" wooden toy trains because the items were finished with lead paint.

The US banned the use of lead paint on toys in 1978 on health grounds and earlier this month US lawmakers questioned industry executives over what was being done to stop dangerous Chinese-made toys being imported.

The US toy industry is vying to ward off a mounting political storm and increasing public fear about the safety of Chinese-made products following a series of mass recalls in recent months.

China produces most of the world's toys and operates around 20,000 toy-making plants, according to some estimates.

Concern over Chinese toy exports -- some with lead paint, some with other safety defects -- have led to the recalls now numbering in millions of items and affect some of America's more popular brands, including Barbie dolls, and some of its marquee companies and retailers like Mattel, Fisher Price, and Toys "R" US.

At a US congressional hearing earlier this month, one lawmaker went as far as to say that the "made in China" label had now to become a warning label that consumers would try to steer clear of.

Concerns also are on the rise overseas. The European Commission earlier this month said it may ban some Chinese-made goods unless Beijing demonstrates it is effectively dealing with potentially dangerous products.
