Tastes Like Chicken: Tourists Eat Meat From 70,000 Dogs Killed in Bali Each Year

An investigative news report has found that tourists in Indonesia's Bali are often fed dog meat, believing it to be chicken.

According to a report by Australia's ABC, an estimated 70,000 dogs are slaughtered in Bali annually, and their meat fed to tourists as chicken.

While the exhaustive investigative report noted that eating the meat of dogs remains legal there, the use of inhumane methods, including poison, to kill the animals is against the law.

The meat of a dog killed by poisoning is also noted to be a risk to unwitting tourists, as toxins are taken up into human tissues, the International Business Times reported.

According to Lyn White, the campaign director for Animals Australia, "The dog-meat trade breaches animal cruelty laws and food safety laws."

"Tourists will walk down a street, they'll see a street store selling satay but what they are not realizing is the letters RW on the store mean it is dog meat being served," she asserted.

The Australian animal rights group sponsored an undercover investigator posing as an independent filmmaker, who spent four months in the popular vacation spot, pretending to be studying local cooking.

The investigator, identified only as "Luke," was eventually invited by Balinese locals to observe the process of catching, killing and cleaning dogs, as well as learning the methods of preparing and cooking the canine cuisine.

It is not known whether Luke was invited to taste the substances that he was reporting on, and whether he accepted the challenge.

"I began the investigation by pinpointing and getting to know the key players in Bali's completely unregulated dog-meat industry," Luke said. "Eventually, they invited me to join them as their gangs stole, hunted, poisoned and killed dogs."

The Bali Animal Welfare Association, while stopping short of decrying the practice of eating dog, are nonetheless attempting to cut down on the mistreatment of the animal.

"This is not about laying blame," stated Animals Australia's White. "This is about unnecessary cruelty that puts the human health population at risk and is causing shocking animal cruelty."

"It also is breaching Bali laws," she added.

It is thought that Chinese immigrants instituted the tradition of eating dog meat, following their arrival in Indonesia.

Eating dog meat is culturely unacceptable in the western, civilized world and
Sounds like the host country is intentionally lying to trick their foreign guest and unknowingly are eating dog meat

Remember, a pig is smarter than a dog or horse...a mother pig is kept in a cage unable to move at all, only removed to the birthing room, often kicked down the aisle as she is in labor. The piglets taken from her immediately, back to the crate unable to move and the process starts all over again. Pigs in private farms have been known to adjust the temperature control on their own w/o any training. They can play video games too. The behind closed doors inhumane cruelty of factory farms happens in USA everyday. Eat more vegetables - healthier overall.

The SAD, standard American diet, has been to eat loads of animal meat 3x a day - because it makes more money for the factory farms but causes health problems for us - a deck of cards size is the healthy portion of meat - protein from peas and other plant sources works just as good for a protein source.

When the nazis occupied parts of Europe, the first thing they did was take all the animals for themselves to eat. The populace were forced to find other protein sources-plants, and statistically, they had less cardiovascular problems, heart attacks, strokes thru those years. We do not need to consume the amounts of animal meat that has become the typical American diet.

As for dogs/cats in the far east, bad news, markets in asia and southeast asian countries are filled with cages of dogs. Do not buy fur trimmed products, ugh boots, gloves, hooded jacket, etcs. below......brace yourself ..........A photo from the yearly chinese yulin festival...

The Violent Yulin Festival: Something Meaningful You Can Do

    Written by PETA | June 22, 2016
At the Yulin festival in China this year, thousands of dogs and cats will be cruelly killed and used for food. The thought of killing, cooking, and eating dogs and cats is unimaginable to most of us because they’re our family members and our best friends. We can imagine their fear when they’re caged with other dogs and the agony that follows when they’re bludgeoned or even skinned alive before being turned into pieces of meat. Or, as PETA Asia’s eyewitness investigation has revealed, they are turned into pieces of clothing. Please join PETA in taking action that will have a lasting impact not only for Yulin’s dogs but also for all animals, and help us expand our educational efforts in China itself. The future of animal welfare in China depends on a change of attitude in the country.

Cruelty like that at Yulin is the result of not having adequate animal-welfare laws. Please respectfully contact your local Chinese Embassy and urge officials to do everything in their power to ban this cruel festival and to pass legislation that protects animals.

    Thank God for Taiwan's ban....

In a Progressive Ban, Taiwan Prohibits the Consumption of Cat and Dog Meat

Written by Katherine Sullivan | April 13, 2017
Taiwan is making headlines after a decision to outlaw the consumption of cat and dog meat, a first in Asia. Prior to the amendment, the country’s Animal Protection Act only prohibited the slaughter and sale of cat and dog meat. According to The Guardian, anyone caught violating the island’s new regulation can be fined up to NT$250,000 (almost US$8,200).
In addition to being fined, those found in violation of the law could see their names, photographs, and crimes published by the Taiwanese government. Repeat offenders could also face jail time and be ordered to pay costlier fines.
The ban is part of the Taiwanese government’s attempt to make the island more animal-friendly, reports Yahoo7. Other amendments were also passed, including enforcing harsher punishments for those who purposely harm animals. New regulations involving dogs’ safety and motor vehicles, including scooters, will also be enforced.

More than a decade ago, PETA helped to get the first animal-welfare law passed in Taiwan. PETA President Ingrid Newkirk toured the pounds there and then sat in a cage in Taipei to call attention to the plight of cats and dogs who are drowned and beaten to death. While the treatment of cats and dogs still needs to be improved—and all the other frightened animals who are killed for the table still need protection—any step forward is a good step, although going vegan is the kindest and best step of all. We look forward to the day when other animals are included in Taiwan’s new law.
