California’s Next Awesome Tax Idea is Going to Literally Drive Everybody Bonkers

Just when you think California’s liberals have run out of crazy ideas, they find a way to propose something even nuttier. TV news station KCAL9 out of Los Angeles is reporting that State Senator Mark DeSaulnier (D-Concord) is proposing to tax California motorists on the amount of miles driven.
DeSaulnier is proposing his bill as trial program which drivers would “volunteer” to participate in. Essentially, California wants to tax driving.
The excuse being used by Senator De Saulnier and other supporters is that the gasoline tax is no longer bringing in the revenue that it used to because people are driving more fuel efficient cars. Liberals have been pushing higher fuel efficiency standards in the name of the environment for decades.
Of course to a liberal the solution to every problem is always the same, bigger and more intrusive government.
Oregon and Washington have adopted similar programs with Oregon charging its “volunteers” 1.5 cents per mile. In Virgina’s governor’s race last year, the Libertarian Party candidate Robert Sarvis proposed a similar tax for Virginians.
Opponents have raised civil liberties concerns about the program. The devices that could be installed in the vehicles may have GPS technology that the government could use to not only track how many miles you have driven, but where you are driving to.
It could be used to track the movements of each vehicle. Also, there are questions about whether or not drivers would be taxed for out of state trips.
Like almost every other crazy liberal idea, it will be considered by the California legislature.
