Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart died of heart failure

    By the CNN Wire Staff
    April 21, 2012 -- Updated 0018 GMT (0818 HKT)

Los Angeles (CNN) -- Andrew Breitbart, the conservative blogger whose posting of a sexually explicit photo of former U.S. Rep. Anthony Weiner led to the congressman's downfall, died of heart failure, the Los Angeles County Coroner said in an autopsy report released Friday.

Breitbart, 43, died on March 1. The final cause of death was listed as heart failure, which was caused by Breitbart having an enlarged heart and some heart disease, said Chief Coroner Craig Harvey.

Breitbart had a small amount of alcohol in his system, but no prescription or illicit drugs were detected. No significant trauma was present and foul play is not suspected. A full report is expected to be available within two weeks.

Breitbart was the first to post Weiner's infamous Twitter photos last year, in which the married congressman appeared bare-chested and in his underpants in pictures sent to a woman online. Weiner eventually stepped down amid the scandal.

Breitbart's regular appearances on FOX News, his websites and his speeches to conservative groups made him a star on the right and a villain to the left.

Republican presidential candidates quickly responded to news of Breitbart's death last month. Former Sen. Rick Santorum called him a "powerful force" who was "constantly out there driving and pushing."

"What a huge loss, in my opinion, to our country and certainly to the conservative movement," Santorum said.

Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich tweeted: "Andrew Breitbart was the most innovative pioneer in conservative activist social media in America. He had great courage and creativity."

And former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney called Breitbart a "brilliant entrepreneur, fearless conservative, loving husband and father."

Breitbart was a driving force in the conservative tea party movement. In a posting on the Tea Party Nation website, blogger Judson Phillips wrote that Breitbart was an "amazing patriot" who "relished fighting those who would destroy this great country."

Breitbart came under heavy criticism in 2010 for posting an edited and incomplete video of a speech by Agriculture Department employee Shirley Sherrod, who is black, appearing to say she discriminated against a white farmer looking for assistance. She was forced to resign over the video.

A full version of the speech showed that Sherrod had assisted the farmer. The department later offered her job back when it was clear she had been misrepresented.

Breitbart also posted video of a sting operation against the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now, or ACORN, which showed conservative activists posing as a pimp and a prostitute seeking advice on how to set up a brothel.

The video prompted a groundswell of action against the organization, including a limited investigation by the U.S. Department of Justice and a slashing of funds from the federal government and several states. ACORN went bankrupt and closed its doors.

Breitbart got his start helping to run the original right-wing online media behemoth the Drudge Report and helped launch The Huffington Post before founding his own websites.

L.A. coroner: Breitbart died of heart failure, no foul play suspected

The Daily Caller – 6 mins ago

Despite conspiracy theories that circulated after the March 1 death of conservative firebrand Andrew Breitbart, the Los Angeles coroner’s office issued a preliminary report Friday that found he died of heart failure.

The coroner described Breitbart’s cause of death as ”heart failure” and “hypertropic cardiomyopathy with focal coronary atherosclerosis,” a technical term for hardened arteries.

Breitbart, who is survived by his wife and four children, built his reputation on the strength of flame-throwing tactics that put him in direct confrontation with liberal activists.

Shortly after his death, Twitter and YouTube were flush with tributes that suggested Breitbart was killed to silence him. A Washington Times writer ran an entire column devoted to the reader mail he had received about Breitbert-death conspiracy theories.

Radio host Erich “Mancow” Muller tweeted his belief in foul play less than an hour after the news of Breitbart’s death was confirmed. “He told me RECENTLY he had big dirt on Obama… MANY believe it’s murder!” Muller wrote.

During an appearance at the Conservative Political Action Conference less than three weeks before he died, Breitbart had promised the release of video footage from Barack Obama’s college years which, he said, would embarrass the president amid re-election season.

That video footage, which Breitbart’s colleagues released a week after his death, was met with a combination of shock and yawns. It showed Obama embracing Derrick Bell, the controversial Harvard Law School professor who founded a school of sociological thought called “critical race theory.” That theory holds that America is rife with white supremacist institutions that must be countered by promoting African-American interests. (MATT LABASH: How to help Breitbart’s children, especially if you think you’re better than he was)
Breitbart.com subsequently released video of another Harvard Law School faculty member, Charles Ogletree, telling an audience, “We hid this during the election.” Ogletree will lead a Harvard law reading group about Obama in 2013.

During the week between Breitbart’s death and the release of the Harvard footage, some conservatives believed the video would be incendiary enough to have the Breitbart.com founder killed.
Writing on Infowars.com, Paul Joseph Watson called Breitbart’s death “a stunning coincidence.”

“It appears Andrew Breitbart suffered his untimely death just hours before he was set to release damning video footage that could have sunk Barack Obama’s 2012 re-election campaign,” Watson wrote.
Radio host Alex Jones, noted for his conspiracy theories, addressed Breitbart’s death on his March 1 show. “Everybody I know says this stinks to high heaven,” Jones said.

“They are all in danger. If they did kill him over this video … I don’t know what he was thinking, having that, and going, ‘y’know, we can bring down Obama, I’m going to release it.’ I mean, I get hyping it, but … I guess he thought he was bullet-proof.”

Later that day, Jones published an article on his Infowars.com website titled “Did Obama Crime Machine Kill Andrew Breitbart?”

The coroner’s preliminary report, released Friday, concluded, “No significant trauma was present and foul play is not suspected.”

Coroner’s Office Says Andrew Breitbart Died of Heart Failure

    Apr 21, 2012 08:24 AM EST

On Friday, it was confirmed by the LA County coroner’s office that Andrew Breitbart died of natural causes. (H/T AllahPundit):
Commentator and editor Andrew Breitbart, a polarizing website publisher who once helped edit the Drudge Report and found his way to tea party stardom in recent years, died of heart failure and hardening of the arteries, the Los Angeles County coroner's office said Friday. The office ruled that the cause of Breitbart's death was heart failure and hypertropic cardiomyopathy with focal coronary atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries.
Coroner's officials deemed the death "natural," and toxicology tests detected no illicit drugs in Breitbart's system. His blood-alcohol level was 0.04%
As AP notes in his post, the reason for his “0.04%” blood-alcohol level was because he was last seen casually drinking at a local bar less than an hour before “collapsing on the street” near his home in Brentwood, California. According to marketing executive Arthur Sando – who had spent several hours that evening conversing and discussing politics with the conservative activist – Breitbart appeared healthy and “there was no signs that anything was wrong.” Of course, there have been whispers and rumors in the weeks since his passing (presumably promulgated by his leftist enemies), that the 43-year-old was on drugs and/or heavily intoxicated the night he died. Obviously, as the Los Angeles coroner’s office explains, this was simply not the case.
