7 wounded in Roswell shootout also are suspects

ROSWELL - Seven people wounded in a shootout at a party at a home also are suspects in the shooting, Roswell police said Tuesday.
Police spokesman Officer Travis Holley said one group of people went to the home early Sunday "with force and they were met with force."

Four of the wounded were treated at hospitals in the southern New Mexico city and the other three were airlifted to regional hospitals, Holley said. He had no reports on their conditions Tuesday.

He would not release other information about the victims because of the continuing police investigation.

Neither side is cooperating with police, but the shootout apparently began with a dispute about a boyfriend, a girlfriend and an ex-boyfriend, Holley said.

"It's hard to piece it all together when you can't any information," Holley said.

He said he was not aware of any gang involvement.

Police got a call about shots being fired about 4 a.m. Sunday, then wounded people began showing up at the emergency rooms at Roswell's two hospitals, he said.

"With that many subjects and that many weapons, it's a barrage of gunfire," Holley said. Police said they found several different types of casings at the scene.

Bullets struck two nearby homes, but no innocent bystanders were hit, Holley said. One of the shots penetrated a wall, and the bullet lodged in a closet, he said.
