FDA declines to ban propoxyphene painkillers

FDA declines to ban propoxyphene painkillers

    By Rita Rubin, USA TODAY

Darvocet, Darvon and other painkillers that contain the narcotic propoxyphene will stay on the U.S. market, the Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday, even though they have been banned in the United Kingdom and are expected to be withdrawn across Europe.

In 2006, Public Citizen's Health Research Group, a consumer advocacy group, petitioned the FDA for a gradual withdrawal of propoxyphene, sold since 1957 and, in 2004, the 12th-highest-selling generic drug in the USA. Sidney Wolfe, Public Citizen's acting director, called the FDA's decision not to ban the drug "arbitrary and capricious." "I have never seen a drug with a more unfavorable ratio of risk to benefit," Wolfe said in an interview.

A study last month in the journal BMJ concluded that from 2005 to 2007, when the United Kingdom was phasing out propoxyphene, there were 349 fewer deaths linked to the drug, but there was no evidence for a rise in deaths linked to other painkillers.

Also last month, the European Medicines Agency concluded that the risks of propoxyphene medicines, particularly for a potentially fatal overdose, outweigh their benefits. The agency recommended that the European Union gradually withdraw them.

Instead of banning the drugs, the FDA is requiring makers to add a boxed warning — the strongest type — about the risk of fatal overdoses. "Our judgment is … this is an acceptable option for patients," the FDA's Janet Woodcock said. The agency also is requiring makers to create a medication guide for distribution to patients when the drug is dispensed. Makers also must conduct a new safety study to examine the effect of overdoses on users' hearts.

The FDA is bought and paid for just like our government, so this is no surprise. It will be interesting to see how they handle the issue of 'endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs)', such as in bottled water, food, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal care products, etc., which is just now beginning to surface AGAIN since The Endocrine Society recently released a public statement on the potential dangers of EDC's.
