Daylight Savings Time begins 2 a.m. Sunday

Good time to change batteries in smoke detectors

Hoosiers may feel a little more rested Sunday morning as a result of keeping pace with Daylight Savings Time. Most states,( Indiana concluded) will turn their clocks back one-hour for the semi-annual time change that officially takes place at 1:59 a.m. Sunday.

Prior to going to bed Saturday, Hoosiers are reminded to turn not only their wall clocks back but as a result of advances in technology, to also reset their microwave oven clocks, oven clocks, DVD players and stereo’s.

The decision to change to DST has been controversial since first proposed by Benjamin Franklin in 1784. For a number of years, Hoosiers has a respite from the change until August of 2005, when then President George W. Bush signed in to legislation the Energy Policy Act of 2005 establishing time changes that now occur the first Sunday in November and the second Sunday in March.

The 2 a.m. change-over was established as a means to minimize disruption in most work schedules however the time change is not observed in Arizona, Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands or the Commonwealth of Northern Marina Islands.

The fallback, time-change also serves as a good reminder for Hoosiers to change batteries in residential smoke detectors as they change their clocks. It is important to note that smoke detectors are required to in all multi-family housing residences and it is further recommended that they be placed near all bed rooms.
