    Are Tea Partiers anti-Latino? POLL

    Are Tea Partiers anti-Latino?

    February 10th, 2010, 9:57 am
    Dena Bunis, Washington Bureau Chief

In the aftermath of former Rep. Tom Tancredo’s remarks at the Tea Party convention in Nashville last week, immigration advocates are asking themselves whether this movement is going to embrace an anti-Latino agenda.

Tancredo, who ran for the Republican presidential nomination on an anti illegal immigration platform, was an opening speaker at the populist movement’s first convention.

“People who could not even spell the word ‘vote,’ or say it in English, put a committed socialist ideologue in the White House,’’ Tancredo said to cheers and applause. “His name is Barack Hussein Obama.’’

Frank Sharry, who founded America’s Voice, a Washington, D.C.-based group that focuses on the politics of immigration reform, said the fact that the Tea Party convention organizers chose to feature Tancredo in such a prominent role is troubling but he’s hoping it doesn’t mean they’ll embrace his crusade against immigrants.

Also speaking before the group was Roy Beck of Numbers USA, an organization dedicated to reducing immigration.

“To the extent that the Tea Party movement gets a lot of attention it’s because of its focus on high taxes and Shenanigans,’’ Sharry told me today. “But if it becomes an anti-immigrant movement or part of the birther conspiracy then I suspect it’s going to be viewed as a fringe movement that won’t last for long.â€

    Their headline says

    Are Tea Partiers anti-Latino?

The heading over the poll says

    Are Tea Partiers anti-immigrant?

    That isn't the same thing.

The difference between an immigrant and an illegal alien is the equivalent of the difference between a burglar and a houseguest. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)
