Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval announced he intends to appoint U.S. Rep. Dean Heller to replace John Ensign in the U.S. Senate.
Sandoval's appointment of his fellow Republican Heller had been anticipated since Ensign abruptly announced last week that he was going to resign. Ensign, once a rising GOP star, was under investigation by federal prosecutors and the Senate ethics committee over an extramarital affair.
"The people of Nevada deserve a new senator who can begin work immediately. Too many important issues face our state and our nation to name a caretaker to this important position; Nevada needs an experienced voice in Washington, D.C.," Sandoval said in a statement.
Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, a Democrat, welcomed his fellow Nevadan Heller to the U.S. Senate. Since Ensign's resignation takes effect May 3, Heller will likely join the chamber sometime next week when Congress returns from a break.
"As his responsibilities shift to representing all Nevadans, rather than a single district of our state, I am confident he will work with me and members of both parties to address the serious challenges facing Nevada and the nation," Reid said of Heller.
Heller, a former Nevada secretary of state, is in his in third term in Congress. He had already announced he would run for the Nevada seat next year, in a battle that will likely help determine which party will control the Senate.
Heller's own polling showed that Ensign was vulnerable, and the congressman declared his candidacy shortly after Ensign said earlier this year he would not run again in 2012.
But then Ensign said last Thursday that he wanted to spare his family from any more turmoil, setting off a chain of political events.
Democrats are rallying behind Rep. Shelley Berkley in the Senate contest. She faces wealthy lawyer Byron Georgiou in a primary.
Heller's appointment means there will be a special election to fill his vacancy in the 2nd Congressional District.
The selection of Heller was praised by Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee.
"At a time of economic uncertainty, it is critical that we have common-sense, fiscally responsible leaders like Dean Heller in Washington -- leaders who are focused on creating real economic growth by supporting a balanced budget and reining in reckless Washington spending," Cornyn said in a statement.
