Wendy Davis’ Testimony Under Oath Was Inaccurate

While the blurred details of Wendy Davis’ biography may be only small inaccuracies, one of them could actually be illegal, as Davis recorded it during a federal lawsuit in 2012. The Texas state senator and gubernatorial hopeful testified under oath that she married her first husband at age 18 and was divorced by the time she was 19.

She now says that she divorced Frank Underwood at age 21.

Several outlets have also noted that Davis’ public narrative – which had emphasized that she attended school as a single mother on student loans – left out her second husband, Jeff Davis, who paid for much of her education and raised her two children while she attended Harvard Law School. Wendy Davis divorced Jeff Davis the day after he made the last payment on her student loans. Jeff Davis says it is “ironic” that the two events happened in such quick succession, but clarified that it would be “absurd” to suggest any connection between the two.

Davis’ Texas success story is relevant to her policy positions. After sharing her personal history with NBC news, Davis expressed that “she is concerned about the rising cost of tuition and fewer opportunities to take advantage of financial aid.”

Davis – who has been ranked as one of the most liberal senators in the Texas legislature – may have intended to use her background in a push to increase financial aid as governor.

In a recent appearance before New York College Democrats, Davis reportedly described Texas’ political climate as “toxic.”
