FEMA has issued an updated version of one of its standard documents, Guide for the Evaluation of Alert and Notification Systems for Nuclear Power Plants, and is inviting the public to comment on this latest version by October 29.
Earlier editions of this Guide have been published since 1980, according to a FEMA notice released in the Federal Register on August 30. “Many of the Alert and Notification Systems (ANS) from the 1980s are undergoing replacement and upgrade cycles,” explains the FEMA notice.
In addition, the newest revision takes into account technologies that were not available back in the 1980s, specifically smartphones and social media.
“This proposed policy is to be a companion document to NUREG-0654/FEMA-REP-1, Rev. 1, Criteria for Preparation and Evaluation of Emergency Response Plans and Preparedness in Support of Nuclear Power Plants, and the FEMA Radiological Emergency Preparedness Program Manual,” the notice continues.
Interested parties can read the latest version by visiting www.regulations.gov and citing docket number FEMA-2013-0040. The full text is available by clicking here.
