Doctors Refused This Thug a Heart Transplant – Until Accused of Racism. It All Ended Badly Yesterday

Anthony Stokes before his heart transplant in 2013; and his last Facebook post
by Brooke Bosca | Top Right News

A Black teenager who was initially denied a heart transplant because of his criminal record – but who was granted one after a media outcry over “racism” – was killed after committing a home invasion armed robbery, less than two years later.

A masked Anthony Stokes broke into the home of an 81-year old woman in Roswell, Georgia on Tuesday afternoon, firing shots at the woman in a failed robbery attempt.

The 17-year old fled when police responded quickly to the scene. He then led them on a high-speed chase in a stolen car he had carjacked just an hour before, racing through 5 school zones in the early afternoon — then struck a pedestrian and crashed the car. Firefighters had to cut him out of the car, but Stokes died at the scene.

Stokes was the subject of a shameful leftist racial smear against doctors who had correctly denied him a spot on the heart transplant list, despite his numerous violations of the law — by the age of 15.

Stokes had a condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, a disease of the heart muscle that is a common cause of heart failure. Stunningly, when he was first admitted to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, the young Stokes was wearing an ankle monitor because he’d been placed under house arrest for a recent fight.

Doctors told him a transplant was his only option — but initially refused to put him on the transplant list:
Doctors rebuffed Stokes because he had a “history of noncompliance,” and numerous run-ins with law enforcement, and they did not think he would take his medications or show up for follow-up appointments.

His mother suggested he was a victim of racism. “He’s a young boy,” Hamilton said. “He’s going to make mistakes, but I still think he deserves a second chance.”

NBC’s Today Show championed his cause, showcasing a clean-cut Stokes and his tearful mom, and attacking the hospital as heartless for denying this lovely young man a chance at life.

    Stokes, with NBC reporter

Worse, the George Soros-funded propaganda mill Media Matters published a scathing attackon the doctors, outright accusing them of racism, and whitewashing Stokes’ disturbing criminal record at only age 15:
Regardless of Anthony’s specific past, his story fits into a larger pattern of racially-motivated skepticism about young black men. The routine criminalization of black youth…which funnels a disproportionate number of black teens into the justice system for minor infractions — ensures that teens like Anthony are often seen as threats. And once society labels those kids as criminal, suspect, or “non-compliant,” their lives are typically considered to have less value.

In other words, #Black(Thug)LivesMatter, a year before Michael Brown attacked Darren Wilson in Ferguson. Forget what he’s actually done — it’s all about race. The Obama Doctrine.

Under this massive national media pressure, the doctors caved, and agreed to put Stokes on the transplant list. Hospital officials even told the Stokes family that Anthony would be at the top of the list because his condition was so serious — news that wascelebrated by NBC and dozens of leftist media race-bullies who got their way. He got the surgery, and a new lease on life, in August 2013.

It didn’t take long to see he wasn’t worthy of it.

Only 18 months after he got the transplant — ahead of a truly worthy candidate — that heart finally stopped.

Not quietly in a hospital bed — but in a crushed car, after shooting at an elderly homeowner, leading police on a high-speed chase in a stolen car, and nearly killing a pedestrian. The doctors were right, and the race-baiting media elites horribly wrong.

Here was Anthony Stokes’ last post on Facebook. What a waste.

Troubled Ga. teen who received controversial heart transplant dead after crime spree ends in fatal wreck: cops

    FACEBOOK
Anthony Stokes posted photos on his Facebook page of him with a gun and wads of cash in the months since he received a controversial heart transplant. This photo was posted just two weeks before he died in a car wreck after a crime spree.

He promised to change his misguided ways if he got a new heart, but evidently troubled Anthony Stokes was unable to make good on those vows.

The Georgia teen died Tuesday after a botched home invasion, crashing a stolen car and ending the troubled life that was extended back in 2013, when he got a controversial heart transplant.

Stokes, 17, wrecked the carjacked sedan into a pole as he tried to flee police, authorities said, and the 33-year-old Roswell woman he hit with a car while fleeing from a botched robbery was hospitalized in stable condition.

The young man failed to make good on the promise he made to turn his life around in 2013, when he was denied a needed heart transplant because of behavioral issues and disobeying doctor’s orders.

At the time, Stokes was given six to nine months to live and the banishment by doctors at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta was essentially a “death sentence,”said activists who came to his defense.

Anthony Stokes slammed this stolen Honda as he fled police Tuesday on a Roswell, Ga., highway. His death comes not two years after he received a controversial heart transplant. He was first denied the organ after doctors became concerned over his troubled past and history of noncompliance with doctor's orders.

The story sparked national outrage and the hospital eventually relented, completing the surgery that August, just seven days after he was put on the transplant list. A total of 63 Georgia patients received a heart transplant in 2013, according to the United Network for Organ Sharing, including six who were between the ages of 11 and 17.

The family said at the time that they did not know the donor's identity.

“He’s a young boy. He's going to make mistakes, but I still think he deserves a second chance,” said his mom Melencia Hamilton.

That chance ended this week just off the intersection of Alpharetta Highway and Hembree Road in Roswell, Ga., some 25 miles north of Atlanta, officials said.

    DEKALB COUNTY SHERIFF
Anthony Stokes was arrested in DeKalb County in January and spent about three weeks in jail, records show.

Stokes, of Decatur, allegedly carjacked a Honda, then burst into a Roswell home and shot at an elderly woman as he tried to rob her, WSB-TV reported. The woman was not hit.

“A lady said a person kicked in the door to break into the house. She was inside the living room and saw the suspect, who was wearing a mask,” Lisa Holland, of the Roswell Police Department, told the news station.

Stokes then took off at a high speed as cops chased him down the highway. He smashed into a 33-year-old pedestrian before losing control and plowing into a pole.

"He did a fishtail spin going around to the right and hit a pedestrian. I saw a white shirt fly up in the air,” witness Claudia Kuklis told WSB.

    WSB-TV
Medical personnel rushed to help Stokes, who died later Tuesday at a local hospital.

Clementina Hernandez was hospitalized in stable condition, but Stokes, who was cut from the mangled wreckage, died later Tuesday at the hospital, police said.

The teen was wearing a court-ordered ankle monitoring bracelet for past fighting when he learned he had dilated cardiomyopathy, an enlarged heart that is too weak to pump enough blood.

The family and his supporters said Stokes was being punished “because he was poor, black and had trouble with the law, which his mother said was for fighting,” the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported.

“So I can live a second chance,” Stokes told WSB as he fought to get on the transplant list nearly two years ago. “Get a second chance and do things I want to do.”

This is the way the Media represented him in 2013 - The chessboard certainly is an interesting prop.

Georgia teen gets life-saving heart transplant after initially being denied access to list

Anthony Stokes, 15, was told by doctor that he was ineligible for the operation to fix his enlarged heart. Doctors, who faced public outcry, later reversed their decision.

Doctors gave Anthony Stokes just six months to live after he was diagnosed with having an enlarged heart after suffering abnormal chest pain.

A 15-year-old boy once told by doctors that his next few months are numbered has received a second chance at life.

Anthony Stokes who was initially denied access to a life-saving heart transplant list two weeks ago has undergone the crucial surgery at an Atlanta hospital, his family revealed Wednesday.

The teen underwent a five-hour surgery that lasted until midnight Tuesday. His family tells WXIA-Atlanta that he is expected to stay in the hospital for seven to 10 days.

Only one month earlier Stokes was diagnosed with having an enlarged heart after suffering abnormal chest pain. Doctors gave him just six months to live unless he underwent a transplant.

His request at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, however, was denied.

In a letter sent to the family dated Aug. 7, Stokes was accused by the hospital of having a "history of non-compliance," which made him an ineligible contestant.

Stoke's mother, Melencia Hamilton, claimed that it was more like a personality judgment hospital workers were making.

    WXIA
The Children's Healthcare of Atlanta reversed its decision, allowing the 15-year-old to receive a heart after all.

The teenager had increasingly gotten in trouble with fighting in recent weeks leading to his house arrest immediately before his hospitalization.

"He's a young boy. He's going to make mistakes but I still think he deserves a second chance," his mother said at the time.

His mother also admitted to having problems with finances leading her to believe that doctors feared he would be unable to afford treatment or make it to appointments - especially without her having a car.

The hospital did not offer a specific reason why they reversed their initial refusal.

Word of the hospital's icy rejection of the ailing teen led to protests across the country that included civil rights groups.
