Dolce & Gabbana’s Slammed For Selling “Slave” Sandals

Dolce & Gabbana is under fire again, this time for calling a pair of summer shoes “slave sandals”.
The name of the footwear, which makes up part of the brand’s spring 2016 collection and will set customers back an eye-watering £1,694, has clearly worried big-name buyers, as the likes of Saks Fifth Avenue tweaked it on their sites to give it a far more PC title. AKA one that doesn’t include the word “slave”.
And clearly D&G themselves have realised they’ve messed up, as the name of the sandal on the website has since been changed to “Decorative Flat Sandal”.
It’s not the first time the Italian luxe label has caused a stir. In the last few years alone, the brand, beloved by the likes of Helen Mirren and the Duchess of Cambridge, has publicly opposed gay adoption and faced racism accusations following earrings debuted on the catwalk in 2012.
But more recently, the brand’s been making strong moves. A collection of handbags and tops celebrated same-sex parents and it was one of the first big-name brands to release a line of hijabs and abayas.
And D&G’s AW16 show, which took place last weekend, celebrated fairytale princesses and included nothing controversial.
But marketing a pair of shoes as “slave sandals” won’t do them any favours.
