A Nevada college student was arrested Wednesday after police found a rifle and 2,000 rounds of ammunition in his car that was parked on campus.

The 27-year-old student, identified as Shayn Striegel, told university police he forgot that the weapon and ammo were inside his car, according to a statement from the College of Southern Nevada.

Striegel is a student on the college's campus in Henderson, Nevada, about a half-hour from Las Vegas. He was arrested Wednesday night.

Firearms, even those found in parked vehicles on a school parking lot, are prohibited on all Nevada public colleges and universities, said college president Federico Zaragoza in a statement published on the school's website.

Police records show that Striegel was held for possession of a possible dangerous weapon on school grounds. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center and was being held on $2,000 bond. His court hearing is Friday.

It is unclear why Striegel had the weapons in his vehicle in the first place, Zaragosa said, but police do not believe there is a threat to the school or any of its other campuses.

He added in the statement that the school's "see something, say something" policy remains important, cautioning students to report anything suspicious to campus police.

Henderson Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment from USA TODAY.
