    Dunn Police Fear Gang Retaliation

This story really illustrates the problems rural communities are having with gangs. They are being run out of the cities and now these small town police departments are having to deal with them. Mix in the Hispanic gangs and I'm seeing major trouble with this in the future.

    http://www.nbc17.com/news/9734713/detail.html

NBC17 obtained an e-mail expressing the concerns of officers in Dunn. This follows just a week after an officer shot and killed Matthew Burris, 19, while trying to serve an arrest warrant. Police believe he was a member of the Crips gang.

The e-mail sent out by Dunn police not only asks for help from other police departments to handle a potential emergency, it also details the concern the department has with gangs and their potential for violence against cops.

Dunn is the kind of town where marquee events include Christian choirs and rush hour in downtown lasts just fifteen minutes. But unfortunately, as the town slogan goes, "It's all right here."

And as Thursday's shooting made clear, gangs are right here, too.

Interim Police Chief B.P. Jones oversees a 40-officer police force.

"A lot of departments larger than ours have a lot more expertise in dealing with gangs and working with gangs and what they're capable of doing," Jones said.

NBC17 obtained an e-mail (complete copy below) that was sent out to neighboring police departments detailing some of those concerns, including the possibility that gang members would retaliate for the shooting of Burris.

According to the Dunn police e-mail, "Information was obtained that the Crips may attempt to lure officers from Dunn Police department in a disturbance and start a riot and or ambush responding officer."

Tensions in this normally quiet town have been rising, and Jones said he's intent on keeping the whole town safe.

"Ninety-eight percent of the people out there, and I'm referring to the black community, they support us, because they have told us so," Jones said. "We have ministers let us know how they support us."

Much of the tension is focused on Burris' funeral. The details for the service have not yet been finalized.

Police said that Burris was armed when they attempted to serve a search warrant at his residence. Witnesses said Burris was not armed at the time.

Until the funeral arrangements are finalized, Jones has instructed his officers to keep cool heads.

"The officers have all been instructed to be careful, be on the lookout for any type of entrapment and be cautious about not sparking an incident themselves," Jones said.

    E-mail from Dunn Police:

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

On Thursday August 17th, 2006, Dunn Police Department had an Officer involved shooting which a Crip gang member was killed during the service of an arrest warrant for Attempted Murder and Rape. The suspect was part of an ongoing problem with our local 9 Trey Bloods.

At the scene and at the hospital there were numerous death threats upon the officers and threats directed at the Dunn Police Department personnel.

Since the incident Dunn Police Department has received numerous calls about additional threats toward their personnel.

The funeral has been scheduled for Thursday and information was obtained that the Crips may attempt to lure Officers from Dunn Police Department in a "disturbance" and start a riot and/or ambush responding Officers.

The Crip sets involved are Rollin 60's, 21st Street, and 374 Hoover. If you have any informants or contacts within any Crip set please attempt to get information about the Dunn area. A majority of the members are from Sampson County, Harnett County, Cumberland County, Wake County, Johnston County, and Durham County, with additional resources in South Carolina.

If anyone in our membership has informants to include prisons and jails, which can provide information on the current situation in Dunn, please make contact with your informant and obtain the information. If information is obtained regarding the volatile situation in Dunn please contact the Dunn Police Department at 910.892.2595.

As previously mentioned the funeral is scheduled for Thursday, August 24, 2006. Dunn Police Department has requested mutual aid assistance from several local law enforcement agencies. I realize that this is short notice, if you are in a position to be of any assistance to the Dunn Police Department, I strongly encourage you to volunteer. These are the times when WE as a Law Enforcement Community need to come together. If there is a threat on one Law Enforcement Officer we should all take this as a threat.

Please contact Major Maury Denning with Dunn Police Department 910.892.2595 to volunteer to work this event. If needed contact
