Thanks for posting this JohnDoe. Everyone in earthquake country should be prepared just in case. I have lived in Cali all my life, so over the years I experienced many small quakes and didnt think much of them. That is, until I was smack in the middle of the Loma Prieta quake in 89. I now have a small back pack with essentials, including meds, in my closet by the front door. The first day of each season I check through it to make sure nothing is expired, or ready to expire. The following is what I have (and what I wished I had right after Loma Prieta).

Granola bars or other storable sources of nutrition that need no cooking or prep.

    Water
. Keep one or two small ones in the back pack in case you have to get out quick. Store additional water in you home AND office.

Pen sized flashlights. These are cheap and easy to hang on doorknobs. Check them often to make sure the battery is still good. After an earthquake it is difficult to find a store that is even open. And if you find an open store, you will find that they are sold out on batteries and flashlights.

    Dr. phone number and med

    One bank card
    OR
$100 cash (cash is better, the atms might not work)

One set of extra clothes (jeans, t-shirt, socks, underwear, sweatshirt)

A small homemade first aid kit (purell, anti-bacterial ointment, band-aids, ibuprofen, acetaminophen, tums, cough drops, and burn ointment...all travel sizes) I packed a bottle of purell instead of the little travel packs. The travel packs can dry out without you knowing. Then when you need it the most, you open the pack only to find a dried out towelette.

Toothbrush, toothpaste and baby wipes. Be aware that baby wipes can dry out in those little travel wrappers, so rotate them sometimes.

It doesnt hurt to have a small pack with these items in your office and also in your car. You dont know where you will be when a quake hits. It is inexpensive to put one together yourself. Btw, dont keep med in the trunk of your car in really hot or really cold weather. It can comprimise its efficacy. Its better to keep some on you....in your purse or briefcase. Rotate it so you dont get stuck with expired med.

I also have pen sized flashlights attached to most of my door knobs, so I can easily find them. They are also checked first day of each season. I had to go days without electricity or phone service. My whole area was down....and even the stores were mostly closed.

California to stage massive earthquake drill

Many schools and businesses will practice ‘drop, cover and hold on’

    updated 4:08 a.m. PT, Thurs., Oct . 15, 2009

LOS ANGELES - Millions of people throughout California have signed up to take part in a statewide earthquake disaster drill billed as the largest such exercise in U.S. history.

Many schools and businesses on Thursday will practice "drop, cover and hold on" — the minimum requirement for participation. Some hospitals and fire departments will stage more elaborate simulations complete with search-and-rescue missions and people posing as faux quake victims.

Some 6.7 million people have pledged to take part, according to organizers.

Last year, the state held its first large-scale quake preparedness drill, focusing on Southern California. Some 5.5 million around the region participated, from school children ducking under their desks to firefighters doing medical triage.

After last year's drill, organized decided to hold one every year.

This year's exercise occurs during the same week as the 20th anniversary of the Loma Prieta earthquake that killed 63 people, collapsed a major freeway, and caused nearly $6 billion in damage around San Francisco Bay. The magnitude-6.9 temblor struck before the start of the third game of the 1989 World Series.

California, one of the most seismically active states in the United States, faces a 46 percent chance of being hit by a 7.5 or larger earthquake in the next 30 years, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The last temblor to cause significant damage in California was the 1994 Northridge disaster.

The drill is sponsored by the Earthquake Country Alliance, made of up USGS, state Emergency Management Agency, American Red Cross
