Police: 5 dead, including gunman, in shooting in US; victims include children

The Associated Press February 7, 2015 3:14 pm

DOUGLASVILLE, Georgia – Five people were dead, including the gunman, after a shooting in a housing development in suburban Atlanta that also left two children injured, police said.

Authorities arrived at the subdivision of two-story homes west of Atlanta after receiving a police call around 3 p.m., Douglas County Sheriff’s Lt. Glenn Daniel said.

Daniel said a man came to a house and shot his ex-wife and several children.

Police were still working Saturday to identify the victims and confirm their relationships, he said.

The shooter, whose name has not been released, is believed to have died by a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Daniel said.

Daniel said he did not immediately know when the couple divorced or whether the family had prior contact with police.

“I’ve been in law enforcement out here 20 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen,” Daniel said.

Daniel said that neighbours apparently heard or saw the shooting and came outside to assist the victims until rescuers arrived. Some victims appeared to have been shot inside the residence while others were apparently shot outside.

Investigators have not released the names of the suspect or the victims because their family members have not yet been notified. The motive of the shooting was not immediately clear.

Investigators obtained a warrant to enter the home, now surrounded by crime scene tape, on Saturday so they could take and exam evidence from the crime scene.

Kenya Beyah, who lives about four doors down from the home where the shooting began, left flowers at the scene Saturday evening. She didn’t know the family but said she saw kids playing outside from time to time, she said.

This is a tragedy. Nothing fuels violence like uncontrolled jealous rage and I am sad for the families involved and the people that have to investigate the incident.

Douglas County shooter described as 'mysterious' man

    9:54 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 2015
    | Filed in: Local News

The ex-husband of a Douglas County woman came to her home Saturday afternoon and shot six people, killing four of them, before fatally wounding himself.

Neighbors say those killed included two children, the woman and a man who was in the house at the time. Two other children were wounded and taken to the hospital in critical condition before the man shot himself.

Neighbors say the couple was divorced and the shooter was the father of all four children. Sheriff’s officials have not released more specific information on the relationships or the identities of the people.

The 911 call from neighbors came around 3 p.m. By the time the police arrived to the Willow Tree Circle address neighbors were already outside tending to the victims until the paramedics showed up.

“I’ve been in law enforcement in Douglas County for 20 years and this is the worst I’ve ever seen.” Lt. Glenn Daniel, the spokesman for the Sheriff’s Office told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

“It being a Saturday afternoon, there were people outside who heard the shots and they came down and tended to the victims until the paramedics arrived,” Daniel said. “It is domestic related.”

Subdivision resident Angela Ansah said her husband, Andrew, came home Saturday to see his neighbors lying in the street. “I saw the bodies in the street. It was the mother, the daughter and the dad.” Andrew Ansah said.

Angela Ansah described the shooter as “a mysterious” man, who would drive through the neighborhood and stop his car on the street to talk to his children playing in the yard. Andrew Ansah said a neighbor tried to intervene when the dad chased the mother and daughter outside but could not stop him from shooting the two.

“(They) ran out of the house and he ran after them” Andrew said, reporting what his neighbor told him.
Added his wife: “It is a quiet neighborhood, at least until today.”

Father shot ex-wife, children after fight over money

Police have identified the gunman and four victims in Saturday's murder-suicide in Douglasville. A 7-year-old girl and 9-year-old boy are among the dead.

DOUGLAS COUNTY -- Investigators say the shooting that ended five lives and critically injured two others started with a fight over taxes and child support.

Douglas County Capt. Bruce Ferguson shared the horror of responding to the scene on Willow Tree Circle Saturday afternoon: "I'll be honest with you picking up that 7 year old and putting her in that body bag is….I gotta stop thinking about it, lets put it that way."

The bodies of three adults and two children were found dead inside and on the street near the family's home on Willow Treet Circle in in Douglas County.

"It tears at your heart. It doesn't make any sense," said Lt. Glenn Daniel of the Douglas County Sheriff's Department.

Police say Cedric G. Prather, 33, shot six people before killing himself. Investigators say he shot his ex-wife, Latoya Andrews, and her boyfriend 33-year-old Joseph Terry Brown. He also shot and killed two of the children he and Andrews had together: seven-year-old daughter London Prather and nine-year-old son Jerimiah Prather. Fifteen-year-old Demesha Owens was also shot, but survived. She is Andrew's daughter but was raised by Prather. Seven-year-old Jada Brown, the daughter of Andrews and Brown, also survived the shooting.

The two survivors are in critical but stable condition. Another teenage boy, 13-year-old Jarrod Prather, was not at the home at the time of the shooting.

Prather was Andrews' ex-husband; she lived in the home with their children and her boyfriend. The two divorced about five years ago after being married eleven years. The Douglas County Sheriff's Department said they haven't found any evidence of domestic violence at the home in the years leading up to the shooting. 11Alive uncovered a booking photo of Prather from 2007 when he was charged with robbery by force/ intimidation.

Police said Andrews and Prather fought over taxes and child support costs in the weeks leading up to the shooting. "All I can say is he snapped or he had enough," Douglas County Sheriff Capt. Bruce Ferguson said.

Ferguson said Prather was on the phone with a friend at the time of the shooting. "My understanding he was trying to talk him out of it, trying to calm him down," Capt. Ferguson said.

"Inside the home, I could see the wife was on the floor and a man was still moving," said neighbor Andrews Ansah.

Ansah said the 7 and 8 year old were always playing with his own children.

"We just had the little girl and boy over yesterday. My son and daughter are their same ages," said Ansah

Investigators said Prather purposely parked his car up the hill away from the home, walked up to it and started shooting. His car was later towed away as a piece of evidence.
