El Paso to ask feds for help treating wounded Mexican cops

El Paso to ask feds for help treating wounded Mexican cops

EL PASO, Texas—El Paso County officials want the federal government to take over transporting and caring for wounded Mexican police officers now being treated in a local hospital.
The officers were wounded in an ongoing turf war among powerful and deadly Mexican drug cartels. They are being treated at El Paso County hospital, and local sheriff's deputies are providing tight security to prevent Mexico's violence from spilling into the United States.

The officers were shot in Casas Grandes, Mexico, about 140 miles south of El Paso. Their transfer to El Paso prompted the second security lockdown at the public hospital this year.

Exactly. They should be reimbursing the United States for all of the free benefits and services for their citizens.

Whose idea is it to even bring them to the US? Where is resposibile government? They should be turned back at the border unless Mexico pays ALL EXPENSES.

Some doctors and hospitals in Mexico don't want to be involved in the care of victims of criminal elements.

Tijuana doctors launch protest against rise in violence against medical professionals............

Doctors and others in the medical field in Tijuana have been the target of extortions and kidnappings in recent months, said Eric Rosenberg, an internist at a public hospital and head of Tijuana's Colegio Medico, the city's largest medical group with 800 members............

    Hospital to send suspects elsewhere

    Beleaguered doctors demanding security

TIJUANA – Injured criminals or suspects detained by authorities will no longer be treated at Tijuana's General Hospital, state health officials have promised.

The officials told doctors who have demanded more security that those patients will be sent to a special wing at a prison in the city, said Dr. José Manuel Robles Barbosa, the hospital's director.
Doctors also are developing a treatment protocol for such patients, including informing their relatives of their condition, Robles said.

He said police and other authorities will help determine who goes to the hospital and who goes to the prison for treatment. Those who will staff the wing will do so voluntarily for extra pay, he said.

The hospital serves a large uninsured population in Tijuana. Crime suspects or those already in custody are often treated there, Robles said, but their presence and a rise in violence have prompted doctors to stage labor protests because they fear for their safety.

In April 2007, hundreds of frightened patients and staff members were locked inside the hospital for several hours while police searched for assailants who tried to free an injured suspect. The assailants shot their way into the hospital's emergency room and killed two state police agents who were there on unrelated matters.
We don't want this happening in our hospitals.
