MARIA VON TRAPP: The Woman Who Inspired the Sound of Music, Dies at 99

    By Clash Daily / 23 February 2014 /

Maria von Trapp, the last surviving member of the Austrian family whose escape from Nazi Germany and subsequent musical career inspired the famed musical “The Sound of Music,” has died at the age of 99, according to multiple reports quoting her brother.
Von Trapp died of natural causes at her home in Vermont, the Daily News reported. Von Trapp was one of seven children of the Austrian Naval Captain Georg von Trapp and his wife Agathe Whitehead von Trapp.

This wasn't the Maria von Trapp portrayed by Julie Andrews in The Sound of Music. The Maria von Trapp that inspired the movie passed away in 1987.

The Maria von Trapp that died just recently was her stepdaughter, and real daughter of Georg von Trapp (portrayed by Christopher Plummer in the movie) and his first wife.
