SOB Hispanic workers die on the job more often than others

Hispanic workers die on the job more often than others
    June 9th, 2008 @ 7:40am
    by Jon Zimney/KTAR

New numbers show Hispanic workers are killed on the job more often that people of other ethnicities.

``They work in more risky industries," says Sherry Baron of the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health. ``Beyond that are concerns about adequate safety training and education for workers, particularly foreign-born workers, who may have language problems."

Hispanics are victims in one of every three deaths in the construction industry. Falls are the most common cause of construction deaths.

Other dangers include ``Hispanics working in convenience stores and other locations where there mayb e robberies," Baron says. `` And so it's good news that homicides are going down and suggests that some of the interventions, such as better security, seem to be effective."

Other jobs with high death rates for Hispanics include waste services, agriculture and forestry and transportation and warehousing.

    This is not more often

Of course this is happening the and their employers are at fault. Employers who try to make money by hiring illegals at lower pay are unlikely to make it their only cut corner.
I support enforcement and see its lack as bad for the 3rd World as well. Remittances are now mostly spent on consumption not production assets. Join our efforts to Secure America's Borders and End Illegal Immigration by Joining ALIPAC's E-Mail Alerts network (CLICK HERE)

I hate to hear stories like this because it is all preventable by not allowing business to slave out labor to people under no or poor safety standards.

Well.......being since they seem to be the only people doing these jobs, then that might be why there is an increase. Guess it depends on where you live but it's been ages since I've seen any racially diverse construction crew, road crew, roofing crew, lawn crew...etc. So it's not strange to figure if they totally dominate the workforce in those areas, then more will be hurt. It's also not surprising if they don't know the laws and rules and safety measures because their cheap employer doesn't tell them......then they are put in more risky positions than a citizen who does know would.

Then there's also the issue of whether or not they are hung-over while doing some of these jobs. My ex was in construction and it wasn't uncommon for half the crew to still be wasted from the night before when they came in...or for the boss to bring some beer to the site on Friday and let them drink while they worked. Some of these places don't screen their employees, do random testing or test them when then are injured to see if drugs or alcohol had a part in it. I've been to convience stores and seen a crew out laying on the ground resting during their lunch, drinking beers.

Not to mention the education factor of knowing the signs of heat stroke and such to where they may push themselves beyond a safe point due to weather and such. I know I've worked at places where if I didn't know to pace myself....my employer sure wouldn't be making sure we were all ok.
They say latinos are high risk for diabetes and anyone with it knows the perils of blood sugar changes and such.

Not to mention there have been many places I have worked where you knew better than to report an injury unless it was really serious because it could mean your job. They won't fire you that day, but you can be assured your pink slip is comming and any excuse will do. There was a while where you were unlikely to be hired if you had ever collected workmans comp from another employer for an injury. So many worked with injuries and pushed themself to un-safe levels in order to keep thier job. Which in turn puts themselves and others at risk. Or employers who must provide something like back supports for heavy lifting and give you one that doesn't fit. They didn't care as long as inspections showed you had one and if you complained too much, you were fired. I had a xxxl belt for 7 years......always promised they'd get me one that fit since I needed the smallest they could make. I never got it. Bought my own and then got in trouble because it wasn't company issued.

There are risky jobs and some just won't do them. I won't work in a convience store in certain areas at closing, because minimum wage ain't worth dying for. Live in an area long enough and you know the places most hit for robberies. If your employer isn't asking for extra patrols in those crime ridden neighborhoods....add that to your do not work there list.
