Maricopa County Environmental Services inspected more than 17,000 food establishments since the beginning of the year. More than 2,000 were retail grocery stores, of which 18 percent had at least one major violation.
Some violations among the top offenders included mosquitoes breeding in the three-compartment sink outside of Baiz Market; severe mold and expired chorizo at Viva Seafood Market; spoiled oysters at Vien Dong Market; roaches at a Los Tres Amigos Mercado y Carniceria; and at Sara's Shell #30, there was slime mold accumulation on the soda nozzles, according to inspectors' comments.
The agency defines a major violation as something that is more likely than not to cause a significant health hazard or a food-borne illness. If you suspect a violation, you may file a complaint at www.maricopa.gov/EnvSvc/Complaints/Form ... Input.aspx or call 602-506-6616, option 4.
