Eleven police officers were shot, four of them fatally, when two snipers opened fire with rifles during a protest over police shootings in downtown Dallas Thursday evening, police said.

Police cornered one of the suspects in a garage and were negotiating with him, Dallas Police Chief David Brown said.

He said authorities have reason to believe that the suspects had threatened to plant a bomb “in the downtown area,” and police have reached out to the FBI and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives “to do a very thorough search” of the area.

“We believe that these suspects were positioning themselves in a way to triangulate on these officers from two different perches and garages in the downtown area, and planned to injure and kill as many law enforcement officers as they could,” Brown said.

Authorities released a photo of a “person of interest” wearing camouflage and carrying a rifle.

“An intensive search for suspects is currently underway,” Brown said in an earlier statement.

Police said that two officers were in surgery and three were in critical condition.

At least four of the officers belonged to the Dallas Area Rapid Transit agency, including one of those who died, according to the agency’s Twitter account.

An agency spokesman said the officers did not appear to be together when they were shot.

A police department spokeswoman emailed a message to reporters asking them to “please be patient while we sort through all of this information as this is clearly still an active scene.”

Video shot by a Facebook user appeared to show officers ducking for cover as shots rang out.

A Dallas Morning News photographer tweeted footage that showed police ducking behind cars and an officer running with a rifle.

#BREAKING: Our cameras captured several shots ring out during a protest in Downtown Dallas
    7:10 PM - 7 Jul 2016

Hundreds of demonstrators had turned out earlier in the evening for a protest at Belo Gardens and a march to Main Street Gardens, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The Dallas shootings were not the only place where protests led to trouble. In Portland, where protesters gathered downtown outside the county justice center, police tweeted that they arrested a man who was “displaying a gun during a demonstration,” though no shots were fired.

Tweets from a reporter for CBS affiliate KOIN News said that "everyone ran screaming" from the area, and a video quoted the man purported to have the gun saying he had pulled it out because he had "feared for my life" in the crowd.

The reporter said the man was quickly and "aggressively taken down by police."

5 officers slain, 6 wounded, 1 suspect dead after shooting at Dallas rally

This developing story will be update throughout the morning.

    What we know so far:

    * 4 Dallas police officers and one DART officer were killed.

    * Six officers and one civilian were wounded.

    * One suspect was dead in a garage at El Centro College after exchanging gunfire with with police.

    * A woman near the shootout in the garage is in custody.

    * Primary and secondary sweeps for explosives were completed early Friday. None were found.

Two snipers shot and killed four Dallas police officers and a DART officer Thursday night during a protest downtown.
Six other officers were wounded in a coordinated attack during the demonstration against recent shootings of black men by police in Louisiana and Minnesota.
A man who exchanged gunfire with police in the El Centro College garage was reported dead shortly before 3 a.m.
The shooting was the deadliest day for law officers since Sept. 11, 2001, when 72 officers died, according to the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund.
Dallas Police Chief David Brown said snipers with rifles shot 11 officers and one bystander from elevated positions about 9 p.m..

At 1:42 a.m., the Dallas Police Association tweeted that a fifth officer had died.

The names of the Dallas police officers have not been released, but DART identified the officer it lost as 43-year-old Brent Thompson, who joined the department in 2009. He had recently married a fellow officer, DART police Chief J.D. Spiller told WFAA.

Brent Thompson, the 43-year-old DART officer killed Thursday night.

Thompson is the first officer to be killed in the line of duty since DART formed a police department in 1989, spokesman Morgan Lyons said.
"Our hearts are broken," Lyons said in a written statement. "This is something that touches every part of our organization. We have received countless expressions of support and sympathy from around the world through the evening. We are grateful for every message."
Three other DART officers were wounded, but they are expected to recover, Lyons said.

The wounded DART personnel were identified as Officer Omar Cannon, 44, who joined the DART force in July 2009; Officer Misty McBride, 32, who joined in March 2010; and Officer Jesus Retana, 39, who joined in April 2006.

One civilian was also wounded in the shooting, and was undergoing surgery early Friday after being shot in the right calf.

The sister of 37-year-old Shetamia Taylor said Taylor was at the protests Thursday night with her four sons, ages 12 to 17. Theresa Williams said when the shooting began, Taylor threw herself over her sons, The Associated Press reported.

The officers were assaulted "ambush-style," Brown said, with some of them shot in the back.

"Give our officers strength to catch these suspects and bring them to justice tonight," he said.

At a 12:30 a.m. news conference, Brown said officers had been exchanging gunfire for 45 minutes with a man in the El Centro garage.

"He has told our negotiators that the end is coming and he's going to hurt and kill more of us --meaning law enforcement -- and that there are bombs all over the place in this garage and in downtown," Brown said.

A woman who had been in the same area as the man who was facing off against police was taken into custody, he said.

Brown said at the 1 a.m. news conference police aren't certain they have all the suspects.

About 1:20 a.m., an explosion went off at El Centro. It was unclear whether police had detonated a suspicious package they found earlier or whether it was something else, such as a stun grenade intended to distract the suspect.

Shortly before 3 a.m., police reported that the gunman in the garage was dead.

Dallas police Maj. Max Geron said officials were conducting "extensive sweeps" of downtown for explosives. About 5 a.m., Geron said primary and secondary sweeps turned up none.

People were encouraged to stay away from downtown. Downtown workers were asked to check dallascitynews.net to see whether their buildings would be open Friday.

    'A heartbreaking morning'

Brown said he was proud to "be a part of this great noble profession," and to see the courage of the officers who ran toward gunfire to help the wounded.

Mayor Mike Rawlings called for unity.

"We as a city, we as a country must come together, lock arms and heal the wounds that we all feel from time to time," he said. "Words matter, leadership matters at this time. I'm proud of our chief."
Rawlings asked everyone to focus on the officers and their families.
"It is a heartbreaking morning to lose these four officers who proudly served our citizens," Rawlings said. "To say that our police officers put their lives on the line every day is no hyperbole, ladies and gentlemen. It's a reality."

From an address in Poland, Obama called the shootings a "vicious, calculated, despicable attack on law enforcement," and said those responsible will be brought to justice.

"We are horrified over these events and we stand united with the people and the police department in Dallas," he said.

About 11:30 p.m., a person of interest in a photo circulated by the city and Dallas police turned himself in, police said. But that man, Mark Hughes, was released from custody shortly after 1 a.m.

One alleged suspect in a shootout with Dallas SWAT officers was taken into custody, police said.

A suspicious package was discovered near the location of the shootout and was being secured by the Dallas police bomb squad.
Shortly before midnight, a Dallas police officer saw an individual carrying a camouflaged bag, walking quickly down Lamar Street. The person threw the bag in the back of a black Mercedes which then sped off, police said.

Officers followed the vehicle south on Interstate 35E and performed a traffic stop at I-35E and Kiest Boulevard, police said.

Police questioned both occupants of the vehicle and they were released, KXAS-TV (NBC5) reported.

What is the immigration status of the suspects? We need to know, even if it seems obvious -- especially if it seems obvious.

Micah Xavier Johnson, 25, has been identified as one of the suspected gunmen in an ambush Thursday that left five Dallas law enforcement officers dead and seven more officers injured, multiple law enforcement sources told ABC News.

Johnson, who died in the incident, served as an Army reservist until April 2015, defense officials said. He was trained and served in the Army Reserve as a carpentry and masonry specialist, they said.

Police said he told hostage negotiators that he was angry about recent fatal shootings of black men by police elsewhere in the United States and that he wanted to kill white people, especially police officers.

The gunman "expressed anger for Black Lives Matter" and told a hostage negotiator he "wanted to kill [police] officers,” Dallas Police Chief David Brown said today.

Dallas Shooting Suspect Wanted to Kill White People, Especially White Cops, Police Say

Police spent hours negotiating with Johnson before he was killed by an explosive strapped to a police robot.

"We're hurting," Brown said. "Our profession is hurting. Dallas officers are hurting. We are heartbroken. There are no words to describe the atrocity that occurred to our city."

Three other suspects — two men and one woman — have been detained by police, Dallas Mayor Mike Rawlings said. Officials said earlier that at least two gunmen were involved.

"I can tell you they're being pretty tight-lipped at this point," Rawlings said of the trio.
