Far right rally against Merkel's migrant policies in Berlin

Far right rally against Merkel's migrant policies in Berlin

The Associated Press POSTED: 05/07/2016 09:14:16 AM PDT | UPDATED: ABOUT 9 HOURS AGO
BERLIN (AP) — About 1,000 right-wing extremists and others protesting Chancellor Angela Merkel's refugee policies squared off with about 4,500 counter-demonstrators outside the Berlin chancellery on Saturday, chanting slogans at one another but being kept at a wide distance by police in full riot gear.

Protesters from the far-right cheered and jeered as counter-demonstrators who tried to break through the police cordon were quickly overwhelmed and dragged away by officers.

Occasional bottles and even a beer stein flew from the counter -demonstration but fell far short of the far-right march about 150 meters (yards) away, amid chants of "Nazis out."

On the other side, the right-wing demonstrators held signs with slogans like "No Islam on German Soil" and chanted "Merkel must go" while waving German flags.

About 1.1 million migrants crossed into Germany last year raising concerns nationwide about how the country would cope with the influx.

Still, the anti-Merkel rally drew only about a fifth of the numbers organizers had expected and three counter-protests drew about 7,000 people.

Police said some 1,700 officers were on hand to keep the peace at those demonstrations, and seven other unrelated protests in the capital on Saturday.

There were no immediate reports of injuries of either police or demonstrators.

There have been no reported clashes yet between the two sides protesting at the rally

About 1.1 million migrants crossed into Germany last year from the Middle East and North Africa raising concerns nationwide about how the country would cope with the influx.

Still, the rally drew only about a fifth of the numbers organisers had expected and several counter-protests were being held around Berlin in support of Merkel.

Even as demonstrators chanted their 'we are the people' mantra common to all recent far-right rallies, onlookers outside the police cordon shouted back 'no you're not.'

There weren't any immediate reports of clashes between the two sides.

This week Merkel said it was important that people understood her immigration policies which have caused her personal ratings to plummet.

She said: 'We have to ensure that Europe is a project that people understand,' adding that a key message that has to hit home is that 'it's better with Europe than without Europe'.

German politicians from across the spectrum criticised the anti-immigration party on Monday after it declared Islam incompatible with the constitution.

We need to pick a day and protest on the same day WORLDWIDE. Send the message loud and clear!

No refugees, no asylum, no illegal migrants, no anchor baby from anywhere!

Go solve the problems on their soil, put in population control, and put them on a path to becoming productive members of society...not dump them on the backs of other Nations! They want America? They want Europe? Go build it on YOUR soil.

I'm personally amazed that Merkel is still breathing air. She is a traitor to Germany and it's people.

Both Obama and Merkel are traitors and so is Hillary and Bernie. They must be stopped. We need to unite worldwide against this invasion of our Countries. The consequences of this will be very hard to undo...it will lead to war on our soil. But USA citizens have the will and the might to do it if we must.

End these failed policies of refugees, asylum, illegal migration and start to SOLVE the problems on their soil. This includes mandatory population control, education and jobs. No more aid, no oatmeal, not one dime until these countries are given a "Comprehensive Plan for Reform" and a team of professionals are put in there to administer it!
