I have no idea why I torture myself by remaining on the SEIU mailing list, but there I remain, all masochistic-like.

Quick background: Remember several weeks ago when I went on a furious rant about fast food workers and their demand to make 30k annually? You probably ought to start there, because it's where I pretty much covered all of the main points of my fury. Click right here.

And for even more perspective, don't miss majordawg's "living wage" brilliance right here. Both of those posts generated a LOT of discussion, particularly majordawg's, which has over 200 comments on it.

And yesterday? The SEIU sent me an email announcing its nationwide fast food workers' strike on August 29th. They're demanding that those eeeeevil corporations pay them more, because they want to be paid more, and therefore they apparently believe they deserve to be paid more. Because they WANT to be, you see. They're mad that executives make so much more money than they do, and they want some of it, so they're basically having a big, fat tantrum about it.

"They're (executives) making millions, and I can't pay my rent."
"I've been wearing the same pair of work pants for years."

"It's hard for me to pay my water, hard for me to pay my rent, hard for me to put gas in my car..."

OMG. I want to shake all of them and say, "Is it possible, just maybe, that it's YOUR FAULT you're in that predicament?"

On the website that the SEIU email directed me to (called Low Pay Is Not Ok!), there was an email sign up sheet which looked like this:



See that check box? It's like these folks think they're "worth more" simply because they're breathing. THEY ARE FLIPPING BURGERS, for crying out loud.

My 7 year old could do that with about a half hour of training. And the quote from the videoabout people being treated with dignity and respect? Please. Have some dignity and respect for yourselves and GAIN SOME SKILLS. Don't be a screw-up in school so that you're forced into a low paying job as an adult. But if you are a screw-up? OWN IT. Be responsible. Don't have kids you can't afford to have. No one owes you JACK.

The website says, about this strike and campaign for higher wages: "We work for corporations that are making tremendous profits, but do not pay employees enough to support our families and to cover basic needs like food, health care, rent and transportation."

There's that whole "basic" word again in relation to "needs" like food, health care, rent and transportation. What exactly does that mean? Can someone please define "basic" food and "basic" health care and "basic" rent and "basic" transportation? What exactly is "enough?"

Maybe they should turn in the illegals that are taking their jobs, everything is okay as long as it doesn't effect them, now very few can find jobs anybody hearing of illegals leaving because there is no work for them??? Not Me!!!!!!....I don't go to those places anyways, I stopped years ago when I tried to put in order and they couldn't understand me....I have never been to one again, oh except Dairy Queen.

Obamacare, immigration reform may make immigrants cheaper to hire than citizens

Would it be cheaper for U.S. companies to hire newly legalized immigrants instead of Americans, as immigration-reform legislation pending in Congress would allow? This being Washington, the answer is both "yes" and "not exactly."
Two months after the Senate approved a comprehensive overhaul of the U.S. immigration system, confusion reigns over whether the reforms -- combined with changes wrought by Obamacare -- give immigrants an edge over U.S. citizens in the job market. It's a potential political landmine for immigration-reform supporters, though congressional policy aides and a Congressional Research Service report obtained by the Washington Examiner suggest that the problem may not be as great as many fear.

If Congress approves a Senate bill that creates a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants, those immigrants would be granted legal status as "Registered Provisional Immigrants." They would be legal but barred from collecting health care benefits available under Obamacare. And because the Affordable Care Act also requires businesses with more than 50 employees to provide health benefits at a capped price, it could be cheaper for those companies to hire newly legalized immigrants rather than citizens who are eligible for Obamacare benefits.
But that is not true in all cases. Following are a couple of scenarios for how it could play out.
•The newly legalized immigrants aren't eligible for health care benefits, but the companies that hire them would be required to count all immigrants as full-time employees. That could push some companies' payroll rosters beyond 50 workers, requiring them to provide health benefits to workers, a mandate from which they are now exempt.
Under this scenario, hiring a newly legalized immigrant would cost an employer about the same as hiring a U.S. citizen.
•In addition to requiring companies with more than 50 full-time workers to provide health benefits, Obamacare forbids employers from charging workers more than 9.5 percent of their salary for those benefits. A company that charges more than that would have to pay a per-employee penalty. But because newly legalized immigrants aren't eligible for Obamacare benefits, they wouldn't be counted when the fine is calculated, reducing the employer's penalty or giving them great incentive to charge more. Those factors could make it cheaper to hire an immigrant over a citizen.
The prospects for comprehensive immigration reform clearing Congress this year remain unclear. But any package that includes a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants will almost assuredly prohibit newly legalized immigrations from collecting Obamacare benefits. Any bill that doesn't include a prohibition on health benefits would likely not attract enough Republican support to pass.
Ironically, that could potentially create a unique class of U.S. residents -- the only one in which members are exempt from Obamacare's individual mandate. They would be the only ones who don't have to purchase health insurance.

Then the article discusses the carnitine issue, but again there is no clear distinction about what kind of meat they tested, then the whole thing collapses into shockingly bad journalism, where the article shows unknowing readers a handy chart discouraging them from eating a small rump steak or a Sunday roast but suggesting that a highly processed Big Mac is OK and some kind of healthier choice! OMG…I can’t believe how irresponsible this is, a trusted site like the BBC News site promoting this story. People need to understand that this is wrong, before Joe Public goes out buying Big Mac’s saying “…well the BBC website said it’s less likely to give me heart disease than a Sunday roast” – Jeez, the Sunday roast, if done to MotherNaturesDiet guidelines, could be the best nutritious meal a family east all week, and a Big Mac is among the worse crap on the planet! What does the Sunday roast include? Vegetables! What comes with a Big Mac – chips and a Coke!!!

The source of the ghastly Thumbs Up for Big Mac – NHS and World Cancer Research Fund – who should know better!

If you research the originators of this study, it turns out some of the directors have patents pending and they earn money from paying fat Americans who come to them for cholesterol lowering treatments, so it is in their direct financial interest to keep up the story that cholesterol causes heart disease, and that meat/fat causes high cholesterol levels.

Finally, the article lacks the balls to make any clear statement of it’s own, quoting some UK Dietician who also avoids “doing an Edwina Currie” and warning people off beef altogether (she doesn’t want to lose her career over one newspaper article…) so she just advises people not to take supplements (MotherNaturesDiet says no supplements) and she says that “we know that eating a couple of portions of red meat weekly is of no risk, heart wise.”

So the article seems incomplete and inconclusive to my eyes. They say to go low on processed meats (I say don’t touch them at all) and they say that lean red meat a coupe of times a week is fine. But they show a ‘visual’ and many casual readers will see that but not read the text, suggesting a Big Mac is the healthiest option on the list, and for that, the article ranks as “utterly appalling crap” in my view.
