February Temperatures Heading Back to the 80s in Southern California

Above-normal temperatures and strong winds are expected into Valentine's Day weekend

Summerlike temperatures will arrive Wednesday during a February warm-up that will include strong Santa Ana wind gusts in Southern California.

Temperatures will climb to well above normal Wednesday, when highs in the mid-80s are forecast for much of the region. Similar temperatures are expected into the weekend.

Temperatures Friday and Saturday will be about 20 degrees above normal.

Average temperatures for this time of year are generally around 67 in downtown Los Angeles, 68 in the San Fernando Valley and Riverside, 69 in Pasadena and 64 in Santa Monica.

"We're going to head into the mid-, even upper 80s," said NBC4 forecaster Anthony Yanez. "There are possible records going down as we move toward the end of the workweek."

The record high temperature for Feb. 11 in downtown Los Angeles is 88 degrees, set in 1971. The temperature climbed to a record 91 a day later that same year.

The heat will be accompanied by gusty Santa Ana winds, the strongest of which will arrive Wednesday and Thursday, and high surf. A west-northwest swell generated last week in the western Pacific will arrive late Wednesday and continue through Friday.

• Drought Update: Lack of Snow "the Consistent Issue"

As of Tuesday afternoon, fire weather warnings were not scheduled to go into effect during the heat wave. A high wind warning is in effect Tuesday for parts of Orange, Riverside and San Bernardino counties.

A 10-degree drop in temperatures is expected Sunday and another decline is in Monday's forecast.

The heat wave comes as the state enters a fourth year of drought that has left California's water reservoirs at critically low levels. State climatologists estimate the state would need at least 150 percent of normal precipitation by the end of the water year, which is Sept. 30, if California has any chance of significant drought improvement.

PHOENIX -- A cold front dropping across northern Arizona has brought some cooler temperatures to the state. Most of the cooling has been in the northern and eastern portions of the state. Those “cooler” temps are still going to be running about 10 degrees above normal to finish out the week.

An area of low pressure is working its way south along the backbone of the Rocky Mountains from Colorado into New Mexico. The storm will bring a bit of snow and rain to New Mexico and some breezy conditions to Arizona. In fact, the mountains will be windy at times over the next couple of days.

Valley highs are expected to be right around 80 degrees through the end of the week. Then as the New Mexico storm continues southward into Mexico, high pressure will reassert itself and we’ll get a warming trend for the weekend.

Toward the end of the weekend, a cold front approaches from the Pacific. That system will bring us cooler temps and a chance for scattered showers on Monday.

Ski Resorts Close as West Coast Drought Intensifies

As we all know, California is experiencing its fourth year of extreme and exceptional drought. Scientists have confirmed it’s the worst drought in the region in the last 1,200 years.

Thankfully, Secretary of the Interior Sally Jewell announced on Feb. 6 that the Bureau of Reclamation is “making $50 million in funds available for drought relief projects throughout the West—including nearly $20 million for California’s Central Valley Project.”

“California’s ongoing drought is wreaking havoc on farmers, ranchers, municipalities, tribes and the environment,” said Secretary Jewell. “With climate change, droughts are projected to become more intense and frequent in many parts of the West, so we need to pursue every measure to provide relief and support to communities who are feeling the impacts.”

Secretary Jewell made the announcement after a meeting with California’s Governor Brown to discuss the Obama Administration’s “all-in” approach to the drought in California.

Outdoor recreation enthusiasts hope these measures help alleviate the crisis because winter sports especially have taken a hard hit from the drought. Ski areas and resorts in Southern California haven’t been able to open or have struggled to stay open for the past several years. But it’s not just Southern California where the skiing is getting dicey. Central and northern parts of the state, including the famed Tahoe ski resorts, are floundering this season, too.

Many parts of Central and Northern California had their driest January (usually California’s wettest month) on record, according to the latest summary from the U.S. Drought Monitor. The California Department of Water Resources (CDWR) reported that at the end of January, the snowpack was “dismally meager” at 25 percent of the historical average statewide and as low as 11 and 12 percent in some areas.

Washington and Oregon remained dry as well.

Unfortunately, CDWR’s snow survey shows that California’s drought will likely continue for a fourth consecutive year.

In California, the Tahoe Donner Cross Country trail, Dodge Ridge in Pinecrest, Badger Pass in Yosemite National Park and Mt. Shasta Ski Park have shut down indefinitely, citing a lack of snow. Willamette Pass Resort and Hoodoo Ski Area in Oregon suspended operations as well.

Hemlock Ski Resort near Vancouver won’t even open this season. Eaglecrest Ski Area near Juneau, Alaska halted lift operations until they receive enough snow to open at least part of the upper mountain. That’s right, a ski area in Alaska is closed due to insufficient snow.

Homewood Ski Resort in Lake Tahoe has shut down all but two bunny hill rope tows. Mt. Ashland Ski Area in Oregon reopened Saturday after closing in mid-January. It reopened because the area finally received its first significant snow storm of the season, according to NPR’s Here and Now. Unfortunately, “even if a record-breaking snowstorm were to hit, experts say there would still be good chance of severe drought” for much of Oregon, according to David Nogueras of Here and Now.

PHOENIX - Winds will continue to lighten up today and will be much lighter this weekend as high pressure takes over.

Plan on sunny skies and warm temperatures with Valley highs reaching the upper 70s to low 80s today.

High clouds will gradually move in from the south through the day on Saturday but we'll stay dry and warm.

Valentine's Day will be the warmest day of the week with a high of 84 degrees in Phoenix. That will put us just one degree shy of that day's record.

Low pressure will continue to bring increased moisture, and more clouds through Monday (President's Day). However, don't plan on seeing rain in the Valley as our chances have diminished. Rain chances will stay across southern and southeast Arizona this weekend.

Winds kick back up on Monday and temperatures drop into the 70s heading into next week.
