The goverment is trying to make life hard for the Ranchers on their private, as well as public lands on which they have grazing rights so they will leave; that way so politicians can make money off the deals that ensue. We must stand principled in defense of justice.

Hammonds to serve 5 years in prison

SALEM, OREGON, October 7, 2015 –

Statement by Oregon Farm Bureau President Barry Bushue on sentencing of Steve and Dwight Hammond:

“Today two Oregon ranchers were sentenced to five years in federal prison under terrorism statutes for setting preventative fires on their own land. We are gravely disappointed at this outcome.

“Elderly Harney County rancher Dwight Hammond and his son, Steven, a former OFB Board member and Harney County Farm Bureau president, have already served time in federal prison for their mistakes and paid their debt to society for the less-than-140 acres of BLM land that was accidentally impacted by the fires.

“This is an example of gross government overreach, and the public should be outraged.

“Today’s verdict is also hypocritical given BLM’s own harm to public and private grazing lands, which goes without consequence. It is unjust. OFB worked on this case quietly behind the scenes with BLM through the spring and summer. That diligent diplomatic effort was fruitless.

“This prosecution will have a chilling effect across the West among ranchers, foresters, and others who rely on federal allotments and permits. It will harm the positive relationship many ranchers and organizations have worked to forge with the BLM, and undermine the cooperative spirit most ranchers have brought to the bureau in helping the health of the range.

“Please join Farm Bureau and declare your support for Steve and Dwight Hammond. Join over 2,600 other citizens from across the country and show BLM that this extreme abuse of power will not go unnoticed and is shameful. Sign the petition at www.savethehammonds.com. This must never happen again.

Comment from federal attorney Billy Williams:

“We all know the devastating effects that are caused by wildfires. Fires intentionally and illegally set on public lands, even those in a remote area, threaten property and residents and endanger firefighters called to battle the blaze” stated Acting U.S. Attorney Billy Williams. “Congress sought to ensure that anyone who maliciously damages United States’ property by fire will serve at least 5 years in prison. These sentences are intended to be long enough to deter those like the Hammonds who disregard the law and place fire fighters and others in jeopardy.”

Oregon Farm Bureau President Barry Bushue’s response:

“BLM accused the Hammonds of endangering lives, but a jury found they did not. Saying they ‘intentionally’ set fire to public land or threatened lives is not what the jury concluded. Federal attorney Billy Williams is wrong in his overblown statements in court yesterday. But he has helped frame the debate as we start to look at BLM’s own actions. If Williams’ rhetoric is the standard, BLM will have a lot of explaining to do, far beyond what they’ve done in this case,” said OFB President Barry Bushue.

Cruz urges armed protesters in Oregon to 'stand down'

Republican presidential hopeful Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) on Monday slammed the protesters who have taken over a federal building at a wildlife refuge in rural Oregon, urging them to lay down their arms.

“Every one of us has a constitutional right to protest, to speak our minds,” Cruz told reporters at campaign event in Iowa, according to NBC News.

“But we don't have a constitutional right to use force and violence and to threaten force and violence on others,” he said. “And so it is our hope that the protesters there will stand down peaceably, that there will not be a violent confrontation.”

Cruz said he is praying for everyone involved in the dispute, particularly law enforcement officials who “are risking their lives.”

The protesters, led by two sons of the Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy, broke into the headquarters of the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge on Saturday when it was closed and no employees were present, according to The Oregonian.

The group says it is protesting the punishment of Dwight Hammond Jr. and Steven Hammond, a father and son who are due to return to jail Monday to serve out a five-year prison sentence for arson on a nearby tract of federal land.

The Hammonds were first given a much lighter sentence, but federal prosecutors appealed, and a higher court ordered the five-year sentence in line with a law aimed at punishing terrorists.

The protesters are part of a group that frequently protests against federal government's management of Western lands, and some of them have told media outlets that they plan to stay on the refuge for years.

The FBI told The Oregonian that it is leading a law enforcement effort to bring a “peaceful” resolution to the dispute, though the gunmen have said they are prepared to use force if needed.

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest on Monday said President Obama is aware of the occupation at the refuge, but avoided speaking at length about it, calling it “a local law enforcement matter.”

The standoff has put Republican presidential candidates on the spot, with some of them having expressed support in a similar dispute in 2014 between Bundy and the government over unpaid grazing fees.

The support for Bundy eroded when he began making racially charged statements in interviews.

Up until Monday, most of the GOP's White House contenders had refrained from speaking out on the Oregon dispute, but that is beginning to change.

Like Cruz, Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) condemned the takeover at the refuge, though he told an Iowa radio station that he sympathizes with the movement to shrink federal land holdings.

“You’ve got to follow the law. You cannot be lawless,” Rubio told KBUR in an interview highlighted by Buzzfeed. “We live in a republic. There are ways to change the laws of this country and the policies. And if we get frustrated with it, that’s why we have elections, that’s why we have people we can hold accountable.”

Rubio lent some credit to the stated goals of the occupation, reported by local media to involve a small group of armed men with very few local residents.

“I agree that there is too much federal control over land, especially out in the western part of the United States. There are states, for example, like Nevada that are dominated by the federal government in terms of land holding, and we should fix it,” Rubio said, adding that it shouldn’t be done “in a way that is outside the law.”

Ben Carson, another Republican candidate for the presidency, said he has “concerns” about the way farmers and ranchers are treated in the West, but said “there is nothing that justifies the armed occupation of government buildings.”

"We are a nation of laws. And that means that when we need redress from the government, we seek it peacefully,” Carson said in a statement.

Among the 2016 hopefuls, Cruz has been one of the most vocal advocates for reducing federal land ownership, along with Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.).

Cruz led the charge against the Bureau of Land Management’s claims over property around the Red River in Texas, saying he wants to “protect landowners from federal overreach.”

Rubio has been less vocal about federal land ownership, but his energy policy platform calls for more local and state control over federal property for oil and natural gas drilling or other uses.

Land management is a major political issue in Western states. Nationwide, the federal government owns and manages nearly 630 million acres, with most located west of the Mississippi River.

Cruz and Rubio have increasingly clashed in recent weeks, with both seeking to overtake Donald Trump in polls of the Republican race.

While Rubio is seeking to gain ground in New Hampshire, the first primary state, Cruz has taken the lead in Iowa, which will hold its caucuses on Feb. 1.

Ted Cruz is not fighting for you or for us. He's an Establishment's Boy with Outsider Talk. And when you think about it, of course that's what he is. He clerked for a federal court, he worked in the federal government for the GW Bush administration, he worked for a law firm that specialized in outside counsel for branches of the federal government, he worked in the Solicitor General's Office under Rick Perry and ran for the Senate in an off-election year where only 632,000 people voted for him in a run-off race out of 27 million Texans to get the Republican nomination. He voted for and advocated with his good buddy Paul Ryan for the TPA for TPP. He supported legalization for illegal aliens so long as they could never have citizenship creating a class of second class permanent residents with no right to vote, ever. He introduced bills to increase H1B visas by 500%, and double green cards from 675,000 per year to 1.3 million.

Ted Cruz is less of an "outsider" than Jeb Bush who has never worked for the federal government. Ted Cruz has worked for the federal government in one capacity or another for most of his career and the rest was spent working for Rick Perry. In fact, Ted Cruz has been part of the federal government far longer than Marco Rubio. He is the Establishment. All his talk about fighting for the Constitution? That's bunk. He wants to change the Constitution, not fight for it.

And here, he tells the protesters in Oregon to "stand down". The federal government is burning the land, buildings, farms, cattle, for no reason at all except to kill the grass, the cattle and the people. Why would any politician support such a thing against these ranchers? It's outrageous behavior by the federal government.

Ted Cruz, it's time for you to "stand down" and withdraw your shameful self from the Republican primary race.

Iowa Trump Supporters! Do whatever you can to be sure you're registered Republican and get to the Caucases on Feb 1. According to the wiki, you can register at the Caucus, but I'd register before then just to be safe. I think all the rats, skunks and reptiles will be out in full force on Iowa Caucus Day, so I wouldn't take any chances of being turned away.
