Pollsters: Obamacare one of the most polarizing issues ever measured

by Jim Kouri on October 24, 2013

President Barack Obama’s legacy of creating a national healthcare system is still unpopular with most Americans and the Affordable Care Act’s web site malfunction is creating more distrust of a government-run medical insurance system with the law remaining one of the most polarizing issues ever measured, according to a Gallup poll released on Wednesday.
According to Wednesday’s Gallup poll, Americans disapprove of the Affordable Care Act, a/k/a Obamacare, with 50 percent of respondents giving the law a thumbs down, while 45 percent approve. The silver-lining for the Obama White House is that the approval of the law has inched up in recent weeks among Democrats, according to Gallup pollsters’ analysis.
While 83 percent of Democrats approve of Obamacare, only 11 percent of Republicans and 39% of Independents approve.
The poll was taken well after the Oct. 1, 2013, unveiling of www.healthcare.gov, the web site that is supposed to be Obamacare’s launching pad . But from the beginning the site was — and continues to be –plagued with major technical problems.
Many visitors, unable to enroll appear to become frustrated which is leading to not only criticism from some members of the news media, bloggers and the Republican Party, but also from Democrats in the U.S. Congress.
According toGallup:
“Americans’ attitudes about the Affordable Care Act remain more negative than positive, although slightly less so than in August, prior to the government shutdown. Gallup measured these most recent views as the technical problems with the health insurance exchange web site garnered increased media attention. This suggests that the poor performance of the health exchange sites may not at this point be negatively affecting Americans’ views of the ACA overall. The law remains one of the most polarizing issues Gallup has measured, with more than eight in 10 Democrats approving, while more than eight in 10 Republicans disapprove.”
“If the news media would stop being Obama sycophants and defenders, I believe the poll would show a higher percentage of respondents disapproving of the Affordable Care Act if they were aware of the overall snafu of big government,” said political strategist Michael Baker.
According to a separate news story, U.S. House of Representatives Oversight and Government Reform Committee leaders in a letter demanded information from Obamacare’s top technology officials regarding the creation federal insurance exchange web site.
According to the letter sent to White House officials on Tuesday, the lawmakers are alleging that the Obama administration ordered the web site designers and creators to hide price comparisons from Americans until after they registered and provided all personal information.
