STUDENTS ASKED TO ‘ARGUE THAT JEWS ARE EVIL’ AND PROVE NAZI LOYALTY IN ASSIGNMENT LINKED TO COMMON CORE

    Apr. 12, 2013 3:34pm Tiffany Gabbay

Students in some Albany High School English classes were asked to participate in the unthinkable this week as part of a persuasive writing assignment. The objective? Prove why Jews are evil and convince the teacher of their loyalty to the Third Reich in five paragraphs or less.
“You must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich!” read the description on the assignment, which the school superintendent said reflects the kind of sophisticated writing expected of students under the new Common Core standards and was meant to hone students’ persuasive argument abilities.
The TimesUnion reports that students were asked to digest Nazi propaganda material, then imagine that their teacher was an SS officer who needed to be persuaded of their loyalty by arguing that Jews are the root of all the world’s ills.
“I would apologize to our families,” Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.”
The TimesUnion explains more of the reasoning behind the offensive assignment:
Vanden Wyngaard said the exercise reflects the type of writing expected of students under the new Common Core curriculum, the tough new academic standards that require more sophisticated writing. Such assignments attempt to connect English with history and social studies.
She said she understood the academic intent of the assignment — to make an argument based only on limited information at hand. Still, she acknowledged that it was worded in a very offensive manner. She did not identify the English teacher or discuss whether the educator faced any discipline.
Students were asked to draw on elements of the great philosopher Aristotle, and frame their arguments as either: “Logos” (persuasion by reasoning), “Pathos” (persuasion by emotional appeal) or “Ethos” (persuasion by the author’s character).
Nonetheless, a reported one-third of the Albany students refused to complete the assignment.
Whether school faculty chose this particular subject matter for the writing assignment, or if the subject matter came directly from Common Core remains unclear (it could have been the justification and not a direct lesson), but the amount of controversial lessons administered under curriculum system is indeed mounting.

Common Core writing assignment: “Think like a nazi…argue why Jews are evil”

If you thought the 4th grade writing assignment I posted earlier was bad, you haven’t seen anything yet. An English teacher at Albany High School in New York actually gave a homework assignment to students demanding that they “think like a Nazi.” When asked about the assignment, the school told news media that the assignment is “the type of writing exercise expected of students under the new Common Core curriculum.”

    from Times Union (emphasis mine):

    Albany

Think like a Nazi, the assignment required students. Argue why Jews are evil.

Students in some Albany High School English classes were asked this week as part of a persuasive writing assignment to make an abhorrent argument: “You must argue that Jews are evil, and use solid rationale from government propaganda to convince me of your loyalty to the Third Reich!”

Students were asked to watch and read Nazi propaganda, then pretend their teacher was a Nazi government official who needed to be convinced of their loyalty. In five paragraphs, they were required to prove that Jews were the source of Germany’s problems.

The exercise was intended to challenge students to formulate a persuasive argument and was given to three classes, Albany Superintendent Marguerite Vanden Wyngaard said. She said the assignment should have been worded differently.

“I would apologize to our families,” she said. “I don’t believe there was malice or intent to cause any insensitivities to our families of Jewish faith.”

One-third of the students refused to complete the assignment, she said.

We will be writing more about the Obama administration’s new “Common Core” nationalized educational standards in the coming weeks, but this is your appetizer. The new school standards were passed as a part of Obama’s 2009 “stimulus package” and are not only bad for education, they’re dangerous for the future of our nation.

    BREAKING NEWS!

    Nazi Assignment Teacher Faces Firing

Students at Albany High School in New York were given an unusual task last week: channel the Nazis. A 10th-grade English teacher assigned students an essay for which they were required to research Nazi propaganda and then make an argument for why Jews are evil and to blame for Germany’s problems, in order to test the students’ persuasive writing skills. After loud community outcry, the teacher, who is still unidentified, faces disciplinary action. According to the school’s superintendent, that could range from a letter of counsel to dismissal.

Each time I read a story such as this I am increasingly thankful that my kids have been able to learn at home. If, during their short stint at public education early on, either of my children had been given this assignment, the results would not be pretty. Not pretty at all.

Just remember this-- YOUR TAX DOLLARS PAY FOR EDUCATION. IS THIS TEACHER AND COMMON CORE WHAT YOU WANT TO PAY FOR?
