Florida man, 88, burns raccoon alive over eating mangoes, police say

Police arrested an 88-year-old Florida man for burning a trapped raccoon alive because the animal had eaten his mangoes.

Ezra James, who lives in Palm Bay, told WKMG that he threw gasoline on the raccoon and lit a match.

Besides the mangoes, James said he was afraid the raccoon might give him rabies.

A neighbor called 911 as the raccoon burned alive in a metal trap.

Law enforcement officers shot the raccoon to ease its suffering.

Authorities say nuisance animals can be trapped and either released or humanely euthanized.

James says he was released from jail after posting $2,000 bail on a charge of animal cruelty resulting in death.

Sick individual. He should have just called the wildlife folks.

Terrible. Poor raccoon, just enjoying from fruit. Horrible.

On a downer, I see a society that has police kill a raccoon to end it suffering, but a human who wants to die they will keep alive as long as they can. And they consider themselves civilized.

Or just share the mangoes. Such a cute thing, a darling raccoon enjoying a mango. Awful what this man did to the poor raccoon.

Raccoons are very mean. You do not want to feed them or encourage them to hang out.

I have been chased by a mom who had babies hiding in the ditch across the street. Their little heads popped up, so cute, as she was coming after me...no so cute part. She wanted to get them across the road and she was coming after me. Went in the garage and shut the door and she crossed them and cut through the yard.

They chortle, they will come after you, she let me know she did not want me in my yard. We have caught and relocated them from a couple places we lived.

They have strong fingers, they tear up the grass and dirt under the cage. We put a towel on top of one until wildlife guy came and he pulled it through and shredded it to pieces. They really are nothing to mess with.

What this guy did was absolutely horrible. Trap and relocate.

Agree beezer. I caught one and he reached out and bent the handle on the cage like it was melted butter.

That wasn't my biggest problem, wait until the morning you look out and find you have caught a skunk!

That's what the wildlife folks would have done. All he had to do was make a phone call.

Yep, we caught a skunk too. Yikes! Someone came and got him, he did not spray.

Raccoons are very strong and dangerous. They will come after you, steer clear of them.
